MariaDB 10.3.7 -VS- MariaDB 10.4 Recommendation

    Hello,

I’ve had to hold off on updating WordPress and 5-6 critical plugins as well as 7-8 others due to SEO work being actively done on our e-commerce site. I did not set up the site and now my tasks are mixed but I’m still required to make the site better and keep it in a working state. Now we’re required to update our plugins but have to update WordPress first of course.

When I updated to WordPress 6.3 on my staging site, I’m seeing that the recommended MariaDB version is 10.4 – ours sits at version is 10.3.7 and I’d rather not start a process to update our database at this time if it isn’t absolutely necessary – we are pressed for time with SEO partner work which is already paid for and also I haven’t done this kind of thing before.

I’m just wondering if it’s absolutely necessary to update now, or are alright with what’s we have for the time being?

Our host has a function where we could make a backup of our database and whilst doing so also changing the version with a few clicks – but testing it will take a lot of time which I don’t have and being less than a layman at that it’ll take more time than for an experienced individual.

    TLDR;
WordPress 6.3 recommends to use MariaDB 10.4.
I have MariaDB 10.3.7. Can I keep using that for the time being with all plugins we’ve got installed?

    Critical ones being
    – WordPress
    – Elementor
    – Elementor Pro
    – WooCommerce (+3 paid plugins)
+ a whole slew of smaller plugins.

Thank you for reading or giving me some insight
    Best Regards,

  • Hi there,

Apologies, but we can’t help with your issue directly because we don’t host your site on our WordPress.com managed hosting.

To explain, we are a fully managed hosting provider and use a custom server environment that is optimized for WordPress, provides built-in security and performance improvements, as well as in-house support for your site questions. You can learn more about the performance and security benefits of our managed hosting here: https://wordpress.com/hosting/

Because of the way we’ve optimized our service, we also use a customized version of WordPress that is different (under the hood) from what you use at your current provider. As a result, we do not have access to your site and are not familiar with the source of your issue.

You definitely have the option to move your site to us so we can provide in-house help, and we offer a migration plugin that will help you move your site to our managed hosting in just a few clicks.

Unfortunately though, as it stands now, we are not able to help since it is hosted elsewhere. The good news is that help is available here at the open-source WordPress forums: https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting

The folks in that forum are more familiar with these kinds of issues and are in the best position to help.

    Thanks!
