Masonry Block not working correctly

  • Unknown's avatar

I wanted to add another picture to my Masonry block on the main page and the achieve page. I use this block to link thumbnail pictures to individual comics on my blog. Unfortunately, the block doesn’t let me select individual pictures anymore, which means I cannot change their order or add links to them.

I have seen in the forum, that I am not the only person having this issue and that there has been a bug with this block. I tried the work-around of converting it to a gallery, changing the order of the pictures and changing it back to the Masonry block. Unfortunately, when I do this it either deletes the individually set link or it links back to the picture file.

I am now displaying this as a normal gallery but I would much prefer the Masonry layout, as it doesn’t enlarge pictures if there aren’t 3 in one row.

Could you help me out with this?

    Thanks in advance.

Hi there, since you said you searched the forums, you may also have seen that the Masonry block no longer works as it used to. The back story is in this earlier forum thread: https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/masonry-block-issues/

Since this is a 3rd party plugin, (Coblocks- available as a plugin on the Business plan and higher) that is no longer offered to lower plans on WordPress.com, there’s little chance of this feature reverting to how it worked previously.

As far as not having images enlarge when clicked, you could turn off the Image Gallery Carousel in your site’s Settings>Media Settings. https://wordpress.com/support/media-settings/#image-gallery-carousel

    Hope that helps.

    Thank you for your tips.

I turned it off but unfortunately it didn’t change the problem (https://psychosophcomic.de/archiv/), as the last picture is still enlarging. If there are any other work-arounds you have I would be grateful to know them.

    Hello again, you’re welcome..

When you say the last picture (INTRO?) is still enlarging, when I click on it, I’m taken to this post. That is to say, when clicked, the image doesn’t display as a larger image in an Image Carousel.

Or do you mean that the image itself is too large compared to the others in the Gallery? This is a bit tricky because the Gallery Block adjusts its width to the number of columns you select after inserting the Gallery images. I believe the default is 3 columns. If the number of images doesn’t evenly fit the number of columns, then one image will end up being larger. However, as you add more images/posts to that Archive page that image will resize.

Here’s more about working with the Gallery block https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/gallery-block/

Thank you again. Correct, it should link to the comic. My problem is the second one and the reason I had the Masonry block there. It did not resize the images.

So, in the end it means I cannot get the old design with any of the alternative blocks? That would be unfortunate.

As I mentoined, the Gallery block images will resize with the number of images displayed. Assuming that you’re adding more posts to that Archive page, this should work out over time.

If you are unhappy with that display, you could experiment with uploading a 1×1 pixel transparent image and adding it before the Intro post. YMMV I have not tried this and it’s probably not a “best practice”. :)

The advantage of the Gallery block is that is it also responsive, meaning that anyone viewing your page on a tablet or mobile phone will have that Gallery block automatically resized for their device.

Staff also mentioned a couple of options for the Masonry block in that other thread, but I’m not certain that is the solution you’re looking for.

Thank you and apologies for the late answer.

I’m gonna keep adding posts. However, wouldn’t that problem persist over time every time I exceed posts that can be divided by 3?

I tried your work-around though. It did help in making the picture smaller. Unfortunately, it was also cropped in a weird way. Maybe I should play around a little with the “Newest Posts”-Block? But it is not what I am going for visually.

    Hello again,

Yes, it would, but you can change the number of Gallery columns in the right sidebar when the Gallery block is highlighted. I’d test how that appears, especially on mobile devices.

Can you share a screenshot? In the Gallery Block Settings tab, there is an option to “Crop images to fit” which you can switch off. See if changing that setting does anything.

Maybe I should play around a little with the “Newest Posts”-Block?

I was thinking about this a bit after my last post. Have you looked at the Query Loop block? https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/query-loop-block/ You can really customize this block in a lot of ways. https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/query-loop-block/appearance/ If you want to try this, create a new draft page and test it to see if that works better for you.

One caveat. Because Plane is a Classic theme and not a Block theme, some blocks may behave a bit differently than advertised. That’s why testing is really important.
