Massive changes to the WP interface

    It’s a huge step back, and makes WP more difficult to work with.

    I don’t know how WP managed to accomplished this, but you have succeeded in creating a verbose and long winded UI that makes your product less intuitive.

    Absolutely terrible front end design.

    I suggest you ditch it asap.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    the new stats page sucks also – way less info than the old page – guess nobody was thinking on this on a short attention span since you can only see the last 10 days

    How can I nicely say it….the changes to WP have no benefit except to make things more difficult. It took me awhile just to find the forums to complain. You had such a wonderful thing going on….visually appealing, easy to access. Those orange stars were motivation to keep writing. The stats page was great! ! So why the change? It is such a step backwards.

    I agree. I’m constantly annoyed by WP high-handed approach which only causes nuisance.

    I posted a lengthy comment about Customer Services
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/customer-services?replies=3#post-2164171
    only to have it closed after 24 minutes and the opportunity for only one reply (which agreed with all).

    As far as I can determine these changes are only cosmetic, result in inconvenience and do not address any any real improvement. Anybody would think that WP is a toy for its controllers. It’s the bloggers who make it successful.

    @grahaminhats,
    you could always give blogger.com a try.
    I’m also interested in their customer services these days.

    I don’t have new “front end” changes. Curious as to what you are referring to.

    @auxclass,

    Nor have I found a new stats page. I have two different stats pages, but each has been around for quite a while, and each has a bar graph covering the last 30 days.

    @mishunderstood,

    What “orange stars”?

    Haven’t detected any significant changes recently, other than the mostly unusable Customize page, the custom header tool of which I found to take 15-20 times longer to use than the old custom header tool.

    Are they rolling out changes on selected themes?

    It’s really horrible what direction they head to with the design. Take a look at this blog post to understand what they want to achieve:

    Upgraded Stats and Navigation Enhancements

    They want to streamline everything to make it more accessable on mobile devices and to give mobile users a first class experience, while the desktop users are not important anymore as it seems. It’s geek stuff… it’s trendy to create “that mobile experience”.

    re the stats related comments, i am no expert on this sort of thing

    but…

    actually if WP wanted to improve our ability to understand mobile traffic and improve app responsiveness.. well I think they have some ways to go in that regard.

    the stats provided by WP are so primitive as to be practically useless,
    the under-counting and lack of consistency and inability to provide us with a way to clearly understand IP-level visits your blog ( I dont buy the privacy hooey, as WP provides IP addresses on comments), how they navigate your site/blog they, how much time they spend, etc, in other words, provide the kind of stats that became commonplace a decade ago, not to mention the traffic obfuscations and distortions caused by the reader that muddies up the stats so that it becomes actually impossible to tell how many viewers let alone distinct viewers are coming to your site is a nightmare

    with respect to mobile usage, the severe under-counting from FB visits etc is simply more of the same

    see for example this

    dark social traffic

    for which presumably WP has no technical solution

    My wordpress posts on one particular blog are suddenly not showing up on Android phones. This was brought to my attention last week after I tested the slug feature, and has been a problem ever since. I’m very disappointed that readers across the board cannot access the full posts any more on their phones. I’ve wrestled with this, I’m stumped, my other wordpress blogs don’t do this at all. If this is an editor update issue, it’s killing my real time reader response, and it’s my core blog that shares to other media.

    In response to musicdoc1…
    When you sign in to WP, at the top of the page, you could access the stats page easily with a “stats” icon. At the top right side, a large orange star would appear when someone liked one of your posts, A plus sign icon appeared if you had a new follower. Now there is a strange looking bell shape icon with a tiny dot that turns orange. Not as exciting, I guess.
    I can access my old stats page but it takes a few clicks to get there. It is no longer at the top of my reader. I have to go into the blog first. Confusing to have two different stats pages….the original one being the most visually appealing.

    Also, I can’t sign out from WP from my reader without opening up my blog again where the original icons then finally appear at the top of the screen.

    @kerin2014, I’m sorry you don’t like the updates!

    While I cannot make changes myself, what I can do to help you guys is to do my best to collect and report the constructive feedback. Not every suggestion will get changed, but helpful and positive feedback is something I care about tracking.

    Those orange stars were motivation to keep writing.

    @mishunderstood, this is good feedback. It’s constructive. I think the new design tries to emphasize content creation (the new post button) to help people who are writing to find their way. All of that stuff competes for attention though, so it’s a balance and I appreciate that you posted a good reason behind why you like the orange background better and I will try to put that feedback forward. It’s possible the design won’t be changed back, but I think it’s worth noting positive feedback that is specific.

    I posted a lengthy comment about Customer Services only to have it closed after 24 minutes

    @grahaminhats, that was me. I did like some of your feedback, and I said so in my reply! Many of the issues are dislikes about the culture of how WordPress.com works, and I cannot change that; but I can tell you that I care about the feedback, I read it, and I tried to pull out the positive things to forward them. I can’t guarantee all your suggestions will get implemented, but you should know that those types of things are discussed and are a part of decision-making and not everything is set in stone after an update so some things may change based on your feedback and feedback from others. What I can do to help you myself is let you know that I listened and heard you.

    @diaryofdennis, optimizing for a better mobile design should be faster, which is good for desktop users too, but desktop design shouldn’t suffer either. It’s a bit of a tradeoff that we’ll keep iterating on.

    I do appreciate everyone’s feedback. I can’t make changes myself, but I can listen to constructive feedback and try to do my best to compile it and look for trends in it. That is the best thing I feel I can do for you right now.

    @yablovh, this sounds like a separate issue from the other things posted here. Would you mind please starting a new thread for that issue and please make sure to include a link to the blog you’re having trouble with and details about your Android device OS and browser?

    Hi, I’d like to read up on what exactly has changed with the Stats available at a new place. Are there new insights from the stats data? Has anything been removed?

    These changes are just dreadful – designed to appeal to the tablet user at the expense of the desk top blogger. All recent (so called) improvements are about removing functionality and bringing the experience down to the lowest common denominator. Why not leave the platform structure as it is for serious desktop use and develop an App for tablet users to download.
    This new statistics page delivers absolutely no improvement.

    @ismailimail, the data has not changed—the design has changed and how it’s served has been updated with emphasis on speed and responsive design that is mobile-friendly. The update is briefly mentioned in the http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2014/12/09/stats-navigation-enhancements/ link that diaryofdennis posted earlier.

    @designsimply, great, In this case, I don’t need to worry. My publishing is done on the desktop.

    Thanks.

    The “notifications” button never worked fine in my firefox. But I could open the page that showed them by right mouseclick and opening a new tab. Now even this does not work anymore – i cannot read the notifications at all.

    I used the new dashboard version to update a text some time ago and it fucked up all the formatting and the posting date.

    Also the new stats are not really any improvement.
