Massive changes to the WP interface
-
I reckon I’ll add my voice my discontent about the new stats pages as well. The transition from having all the information right in front of me to the need new page, which requires multiple clicks and has minimal data visible at any given time is such a huge step backwards. I understand that it is nice to have mobile friendly stuff but this is too much. I don’t even like it on my phone, let along on my desktop. I hope there will be a way to at least choose which stats page is the default or something. Stop the unwarranted changes and stick with what made WP awesome!
-
I’m not going to read all the previous posts, but specifically here are my complaints about the new stats page (so far):
– Put back the search terms, even though they were severely crippled a while back. They’re interesting!
– Return the bar graph to 30 days, so that recent trends can be seen. And put back the mouseover names of posts published on each day so we can quickly see why readership might have spiked on a given day.
– Put back the option for a two-column page and modules that can be rearranged to suit our preferences. I’m on a laptop. Why should I have to scroll down forever when I’ve got two columns of width available?
– Get rid of all the excess explanations and wasted space. Don’t make me scroll down and/or read around filler to find what I want.
– Stop changing everything to suit only mobile devices!! Serious bloggers want and need a full keyboard and screen.
– And lastly but most important: Put in a default for the old stats page so I don’t have to go through the new one first. -
Put in a default for the old stats page so I don’t have to go through the new one first.
Or through the dashboard.
I don’t think we can stress these issues enough—particularly those of us with long-form sites here. The thought of the dashboard picking up the stats UI is frustrating.
Let’s put this into perspective: on my laptop (1280 by 800), I can see 1-2 categories at a time with the new stats page. I can see 4-5 categories using the old stats. It isn’t much better on my desktop (2560 x 1440), as illustrated by the files I posted earlier.
The new UI may make sense for lightweight mobile operating systems, but it’s burdensome and inefficient on computers. I don’t think any of us want to see WordPress devolve into Tumblr or Instagram, but that seems to be the direction its going if the stats page is indeed the harbinger of things to come.

You keep saying that it will take time to respond and make changes and yet within the last 24 hours you have changed access to old stats by removing the direct link from the black tool bar which now goes directly to new stats.
I think that is called ‘rubbing people’s noses in it’. Of course you can change thinks quickly it is simply that there is no desire or intention to do so.
Like a lot of other people I want to get to old stats quickly!
You keep using the word constructive. Negative feedback is constructive if you interpret it in the correct way. Users don’t like the new format – that is constructive feedback! -
@davidderrick shouldn’t be so difficult either, I wrote browser checking code in Notepad 15 years ago! I’m very much assuming WP has real programmers. ;)
-
Incidentally, the “old” stats in the Dashboard is not the same as the old stats in the title bar – for instance the country thing is missing, which is something I like. Yes, I know the new one has it, way, way down under somewhere.

—————————– More Information for All
The relevance to this topic being: Events that might be connected with recent changes.
Plain facts: Tiger Global are investment speculators. Prior to September 2013 they held a $50 million stake in Automaticc Inc (that’s WP).
Approximately September 2013 they acquired another $60 million of private equity. The article, which makes interesting reading, is here.
http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2013/09/17/tiger-global-ups-investment-in-creator-of-wordpress/
Tiger Global have increasing investment in mobile, messaging and e-commerce companies, especially in places where landlines are not always available. Here is one of several articles on the subject.
http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/09/17/quikr-tigerglobal-idUSL3N0RI4B920140917
Conjecture: If there is any connection between these items and recent changes that are intended to be more mobile friendly, then the alleged improvements have been handled so badly as to become a poison chalice.
Options: If this topic makes you annoyed, then the best approach is to ensure the unity of a collective voice in one place. May I suggest that; bloggers create a post upon this subject with a link to the forum thread.

Can we still have the old Distraction Free Writing back? I really liked it because it was downright “distraction-free” – no scroll bars, no site navigator on top of page, no buttons for Bold or Italic or Justify floating on top. All it does is give me a white blank page – kind of like a very clean sheet of paper – with only the title and the content (and word count) visible. I could do all the editing I want afterwards, when I need the buttons. When I turn on Distraction Free Writing, I am telling my post editor I really mean I wanted a distraction-free environment. It’s actually one of the features that sets WordPress apart from other bloghosts like Blogger.
Also, on a side note, it hovers with the message “Just write.” (Which happily disappears once you start writing; and appears to seemingly be gone on this new “oh yeah this is better” editor.)
Please at least give us an option to revert back, or at least have a button that does it if you want it to. Because, now, nothing is more distracting than your Distraction Free Mode.
(Also posted this on a same thread directly focused on the topic.)

Automattic’s profile is rising in the wake of Yahoo ‘sYHOO +0.23% $1.1 billion purchase of Tumblr in May. Despite limited revenue, Yahoo’s CEO Marissa Mayer said she was eager to acquire the blogging service for its growth and its mobile footprint. Automattic’s blogging platform, WordPress, also has scale. It is used by 19.9% of all Web sites, according to the company. The figure represents about a 3 percentage point increase since the beginning of 2012.
grahaminhats — thx for post the WSJ link. if the above ever happens, I am literally taking my business elsewhere. yahoo is a rubbish company run by an incompetent elitist who simply was in the right place at the right time.

@ivanbicol, thanks for your feedback. I noticed there are already some happiness engineer replies on the other thread you mentioned talking about the change to distraction free writing that came from the core WordPress project, which is separate from the discussion here about the new WordPress.com dashboard. I will defer to the other answers already posted in that thread.

I don’t know how long it will be available but the following link (which I somehow have as an official wp bookmark that I don’t remember ever adding, it just appeared in my toolbar at some point) still goes to the “real” old stats page, which still has the countries map etc. I always use that to check my stats now:
-
So glad that this thread has informed me of the presence of a new stats page. Otherwise I wouldn’t have noticed.
-
The map, which has recently appeared on the the new stats page, has now disappeared from the classic/old stats page.
Before ask for more details, there is only one map.
Is WP deliberately trying to annoy us or just force us into using this farcical excuse for “upgraded” stats. Whichever is the case it certainly will enrage.

I still see the traffic map in the classis stats page Graham.
Me too.
-
I still see it Graham, although there are still two versions of the proper stats, old and old old!

@diaryofdennis
@galois
@apetcherThank you for the feedback and for keeping a watch on this feed.
I access the stats using a bookmark ‘https://wordpress.com/my-stats/
At 11:08 it had changed in appearance and the map was missing. Following your feedback, I checked again and it had been restored.
Maybe somebody made a mistake and corrected it, maybe they were just testing it or maybe they were paying attention this time.
I think there is an agenda, which we no nothing about, and they will pursue it regardless. All we can do is continue to monitor and, in future, I will take screen shots as I really should have done this time.
When I can find the time I will be posting two more articles under the title “WordPress Image vs Reality”.
The number of views on the the post “Recent changes ~” is double my average and increasing. So people are paying attention.
Once again, thanks for the feedback
Merry Xmas to all. :-)

It’s gone from the old blue Stats page. Where it should be has a message: “Requested map does not exist,” with an X in a box to close the message. The message is in bright red; can’t miss it.

Got the map back by allowing Google.com to have a cookie on the page.

Thanks for the feedback.
In my case the the map box was entirely missing and the whole page had changed in appearance. About 20 mins later it was restored. It was probably not seen by many. But, to have appeared at all means that somebody is working on it. oh joy !
