Massive changes to the WP interface

    All of this explanation is precisely what’s wrong with the new format. Presently, I can click onto my stats page and see all of my information on that one page. If I want to explore further, I can.

    The new format requires entirely too much clicking and scrolling… down…down…down…

    Not only that, the huge graphic are exactly what I expected when I saw the new icon for creating a new post: the stubby pencil. Now we have a bell, huge graph bars (although far fewer than before) and so on.
    It looks like a site designed for third graders, and not very advanced ones, at that.

    When I found the “trophies” icon, I threw up my hands and clicked out. There are real ideological convictions underlying many of these changes, including “everyone gets a trophy.”

    I don’t want a trophy. I want a usable site. The changes that are being made are making this site less usable. And no, I’m not going to be more specific, because every issue I have already has been covered, and I’ve taken the surveys.

    Thanks for your feedback, @shoreacres. I will add it in with the rest. The point about scrolling is a common note, thanks for including that.

    @designsimply, All these responses are very cheerful and polite, but is this the way WP should be progressing? Amateurish trial and error? Why not try to thrill us first time round!

    @designsimply

    Thank you for this link, which I cheerfully bookmarked:
    https://wordpress.com/my-stats
    This is now the only way I’ve found to reach the “classic” stats page… the one which was the current stats page few days ago.

    If any WP higher-ups are reading critiques in threads like this one, here’s my take on this hot-button topic:

    WP users pay for their sites. That makes us customers. So it fascinates me that we weren’t given the option of a beta page to look at and/or test and/or comment on. Google absolutely destroyed Maps for desktops and laptops… it’s now close to unusable. But Maps is free. All I can really do in that case is groan and move on.

    There is some history to prove I’m not just being a whiny baby. I was new to WP once, and aside from some coding issues, I navigated around without too much problem. Now there’s a problem. But I promise to wait a few months to see what transpires.

    On the “new, too-blue, too much scrolling” Stats page, I am not finding the map graphic. I clicked “view all” at the bottom of Countries and only found a list of countries.

    Where did the time stamp go?

    Thank you for letting us know that WP will discontinue the 2 older Stats pages.

    Also on the “new” Stats page I cannot click on the top toolbar/admin bar to go to the top of the page. With all the scrolling down we must do, having the easy “go to top” click on the toolbar is necessary.

    designsimply…I agree with everything above. The scrolling, the blue, extra clicking. The original stats page is easy to use and read. This one is not. Simple as that. It seems that you keep asking for specific suggestions or complaints. It is frustrating to remain calm about changes that have caused so much dissatisfaction. The posts on this thread continue to say the same things. I am not sure what more we can do to make it clear that these changes are not good in any way. Perhaps a survey emailed to every WordPress member. I think “member” being a key word in this process.

    When I looked at my blog’s stats on my Android phone this afternoon,the menu showed a comment waiting for approval. The same comment was (accurately) marked as spam on the desktop version of WP.

    On the other hand, the desktop version showed a notification of a new follower. There was no notification showing on the Android version.

    Now it looks like the new version of the Stats page is not even consistent in providing the same information across different platforms.

    My small contribution:
    On my large monitor desktop: –
    Huge graphics that waste a large amount of space on the screen.
    Less upfront information – click for this click for that etc.
    A lot of scrolling around finding the bits I am interested in, rather than having the whole screen used and most of the information available at a glance (as in the original iteration) what is it with this bell thing and the big box with the pencil – I feel I have gone back to my baby school books.
    Like the image editor changes – yes I have managed to work around what I did not like about them & and I expect I will with these. But….
    Why is it always the customer that need compromise and that is what we are.
    I understand the need for change, but do it slowly & with ‘user’ beta testing (not hard surely?) then issue a good stable product.

    Please keep twin tracks. One interface for mobile users. One for desktop/notebook users. Like IOS and OSX. Don’t dumb down the latter.

    @designsimply
    Thanks for your replies to all of us.
    re my comment and your reply:

    Then, in Posts&Pages, I clicked on “show all” and noted that there was no total at the bottom any more showing total # of clicks on posts!

    The total is in the bottom part of the graph, next to the word Views.

    Of course it is, what I mean is that now, once you click to see the expanded view of all your posts, you can no longer see the total, only the number for each one. I didn’t use to have to click back to the graph to see the total, it was also there at the bottom of the expanded list. Easy. I might not have checked it under the graph before clicking to expand post views. Or I might have forgotten the total, whatever. I don’t want to have to click back to see it, it should be right there in the section that it pertains to.

    I tried what you said to find history of views for a post, thanks. That was not apparent at all. Now a history comes up with no graph! That graph was so easy to see where and when in the post’s history its views had dropped off or picked up, now I have to individually look at a little box for every day/ month/ (year?) and compare a bunch of numbers. This takes way to long to be worth it to figure out anything useful. PLEASE bring back the graph for this!!! Just today I noted (in “old stats”) via that graph that a link to a previous post I added in Aug has more than doubled its pageviews since then, really important feedback for me to know…

    Question: How long will the original stats page be available? Is it destined to disappear as an option?

    @designsimply

    It is becoming increasingly clear to me that no one seems to know what they have done. It is as though developers didn’t know what was there before, what they have replaced and what they have omitted in the upgrade. So many functions have disappeared into the improvement black hole the product is almost unrecognisable. There is no logical flow to the screen options. There is a blue tool bar and a black tool bar that do different things.

    When users point out that functions have disappeared there seems to be genuine surprise at WP.

    If I had made so many errors in my job I’d expect to be disciplined or fired!

    The frustration continues…..

    Was any of this work done by persons not directly employed by WP ?

    I’ve just realised something.

    Those of you in WP who have fast broadband, will not realise that an extra click means waiting for another screen page to load before the next click is available. The wasted time and annoyance accumulates.

    @davidderrick, that’s a pretty big part of my personality. :)

    is this the way WP should be progressing?

    Good question. What I know is that WordPress.com has made a decision to work on a new dashboard design in parallel with the old one. You can still access the older stats from the WP Admin pages any time.

    @zimjason

    So it fascinates me that we weren’t given the option of a beta page to look at and/or test and/or comment on.

    The option to view both designs is there right now. Testing was done but not offered to every single person. There are also lots of comments happening, and I am trying to pull out the feedback that is about specific details when people take the time to voice their opinion about specifics—collecting those comments and reporting on those kinds of details is what I can do to help everyone and I am working hard to do that. Thank you for participating.

    I was new to WP once, and aside from some coding issues, I navigated around without too much problem. Now there’s a problem. But I promise to wait a few months to see what transpires.

    I think it’s cool that you posted your opinion and ended with a positive outlook about waiting to see what transpires. There is a lot that goes in to both creating and launching a new design as well as what happens afterward to gather up the feedback and see what can be done going forward. Additional changes won’t be immediate, the new stats design has only been public for a few days, and feedback is still coming in.

    @dandelionsalad, I see that you’ve started posting a lot of duplicate questions. I answered your latest questions above about stats on the other thread you are participating in.

    Thank you for letting us know that WP will discontinue the 2 older Stats pages.

    Please let me triple check this. Also, note that I said probably. :) Also, I can tell you what the current plans are, but plans can change and are note 100% set in stone.

    I’m pretty sure this one https://wordpress.com/stats is meant to replace this one https://wordpress.com/my-stats but the other one may stay.

    It seems that you keep asking for specific suggestions or complaints. It is frustrating to remain calm about changes that have caused so much dissatisfaction.

    Keep in mind changes based on feedback won’t be immediate. The new stats design has only been publicly available for a few days. I am still collecting feedback. Please try to be patient. I know that you are frustrated and I am working to help you.
