Mastodon not showing up in social subscriber count

I have almost 1000 followers, but the number shows as 0 in stats and on follow forms. I think someone forgot to add it when adding support for posting to Mastodon.
WP.com: Yes
Jetpack: No
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

Hi there!
Thank you for reaching out.
If you have followers for example, on Facebook, you will want to connect your site to it to see them in WordPress.com stats. It can be done in Tools > Marketing > Connections.
Here is the guide on that: https://wordpress.com/support/post-automatically-to-social-media/
I hope it helps!

You misunderstood. I already connected it. The followers aren’t showing like they do with other social connections.

Hi again,
If I visit https://wordpress.com/marketing/connections/kyefox.wordpress.com I see only Mastodon connection. Is this the one in question or is it about Facebook?
For Facebook, you will want to connect it again because now it is not active.

I haven’t said anything about Facebook. I explicitly named Mastodon in the subject line. I’m trying not to get frustrated, but all the necessary information to understand what my issue is seems to be present.

Hi! Just to check, is there a setting in your Mastodon instance which lets you set your followers to private? From the information in your Connections page, I checked your Mastodon profile as a logged-out visitor to the instance and your followers tab it shows the number (nearly 1000) but then when I click on your followers tab to view it, it just shows me “No one follows this user yet”. It looks like both your followers and the people you follow are private, or at least not visible to logged-out visitors.
I’m not sure if our Mastodon integration would have the possibility to add a private list of followers to the stats, but I’ve passed the query on about this.

That is a possibility. The privacy setting is there to keep crawlers from scooping up my social graph, but I always assumed Mastodon’s API would at least still return a following count with it on.
I turned “Hide your social graph” off and reconnected the account. The count still shows as 0. I’ll leave it for a bit to see if the number changes any.

Thanks for reporting back! I’ve added this information to a report for the developers. I should note that I don’t have any details as to when they would have a chance to implement a fix, but the notes so far have been passed on so they can investigate further.
-
Thanks to both of you for your efforts. Is there a public issue tracker for stuff like this? I found the Trac for .org, but I don’t see anything for .com issues.

Hey there,
You’re most welcome and I’m glad we can help here.
With regards to feature requests being worked on behind the scenes and tweaks behind the scenes, we tend not to make these too public.
The reason being is that different issues are worked on based on priority, and that can shift from day to day depending on what’s happening in the world.
For instance, changes in Twitter’s API is a perfect example of that.
I know that probably doesn’t offer much in the way of information, but I hope it adds some understanding none the less.
I hope this helps!
Let us know if we can be of any further assistance.
