  How do I write mathematical expressions/equations in a post. I wrote exactly the same thing that Gowers wrote in a post on August 22, 2011. I wrote
  begin{pmatrix}1 & 2 3 & 4 end{pmatrix}, but I got the same expression back again instead of the expected 2 by 2 matrix.
