max main column width
-
I have tried several popular themes, but they all have main column width narrower than I prefer.
Which theme has the maximum main column width? I also need the second column for the widgets, but I prefer it to be narrow.
Thanks,

Are you referring to a free blog from and being free hosted by wordpress.COM? I’m asking because you have not posted the URL for the blog in question starting with http:// and you have not linked your username to a blog. The answwrs are different depending on whether or not your are referring to a free hosted wordpress.COM blog or a wordpress.ORG install.
Please post the URL for the blog in question. For clarity see here > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/please-read-me-first-before-posting?replies=1

If you are talking about a blog hosted here at wordpress.COM, then this post by Panos gives the maximum widths for the post areas on the themes we have here.

thanks timethief and thesacrepath.
Here is my blog address, http://viv7000.wordpress.comI am not looking for the image size, I understand I can change it to fit into the main content column. However, I wonder if I can maximize the main content column width, so that I don’t have the wide white margins on both sizes.

The reason that most themes don’t go full width is that a huge number of people are still on 1024 x 768 monitor resolutions and if you go wider than that then a good number of your visitors are going to have to horizontally scroll to be able to see your whole blog. 1024 in width is the maximum that most theme authors design for so that people do not have to scroll horizontally (which is one of the top 3 out of 10 things people dislike most on the web.
Current monitor resolution web statics:
1024×768 — 40.28%
1280×1024 — 16.97%
1280×800 — 16.89%
1440×900 — 7.71%
1680×1050 — 4.28%
800×600 — 4.01%There are several themes here that are flexible width and they expand to fit the browser window width. You can go to http://theme.wordpress.com/ and then click the “expore the themes” button and then use the filter feature to sort by flexible width.

“I am not looking for the image size”.
Maximum image width in each theme = main column width. So the post thesacredpath originally linked to is the answer to question, as it lets you compare the main column width of all themes.

@viv7000
Thanks for supplying the URL. TSP has supplied the link to a post that will contain the maximum width in the blogging space for posts and pages and Panos has explained the relevance width regard to content be it images or text the maximum width is the maximum width. As you are looking for a 2 column theme and state your want a narrow sidebar this link is too a post which which reveal sidebar widths on the various themes > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/01/11/sidebar-width/Se here for the Theme demo site http://theme.wordpress.com/

And here in netbook land, I’m surfing with a maximum resolution width of 1024 pixels, so content width is a huge consideration.

Kind of ironic, isn’t it? Now that we have these big honking desktop screens, more people are viewing on smaller and smaller devices. :)

Makes it difficult for web designers since we have to make sure and include mobile themes, and for those of us that don’t have a smartphone, it is difficult to even check to see if things are looking right. I’m going to have to break down and get one just so I can check websites.

Hmmm, hadn’t thought of that. I’ll have to check that out. Still I dream of having an iPhone. Hopefully the iPhone/Verizon rumors are true this time around.

Thank you everybody! I think I start to understand a bit more about the web display.
