Media displayed on social sites

When I write a post, how do I choose the image that displays on Facebook and/or Google +? Is this a featured image? When I tried to set one, it didn’t display properly on my post. It was HUGE!

Yes generally it is indeed the featured image for your post that gets sent to various social media, though if you don’t have a featured image we will try and send something else instead in a specific order. Here’s some information about that:
