Media File

Photographers have a difficult task managing the Media Library. Images fill up quickly so we either have to delete posts, or start a new blog as 3GB is really not enough storage space.

Today, I experimented with copying an image HTML from Blogger, and pasting it into a WordPress post. It seems to work beautifully, and the images do not take up space in the media files.

Is this a practical work around, or am I missing something?

Yes you can link to an image hosted elsewhere. Is the Blogger site your own? If not then be aware that the link could break if others delete the image over there.

  • Hi @topcat1953,

If you’re consistently running into space limitations, you might want to consider upgrading to a Premium plan which has a total of 13GB of storage. If you need more than that, the Business plan includes 200GB and other great features.

I hope that helps and please reach out again if you have any further questions.

Yes, the Blogger site is mine.

The mindset of bloggers like me is that we don’t want to pay which is why we use the free version. I upgraded once for about a week or so, and just didn’t want the extra expense.

A fellow blogger has a number of free blogs. As they fill up, he just starts another one. What we don’t understand is that he has close to 20 GB of cumulative storage space which begs the question: Why can’t he just post everything on one blog? He’s actually using more space (for free) than an upgraded plan.

Ideally, a creator would like to present all their content in one space. It’s the best way to build a following. Oftentimes, current readers don’t get migrated over to the new blog and, the guy I mentioned, starts with zero followers. It’s a real hassle.

  • Storage does cost money, and if we do catch abuse of that, it could be a violation of our terms of service which may result in a permanent suspension.

To increase your storage properly, you do need a paid plan: https://wordpress.com/support/space-upgrade/

Alternatively, you can host your images elsewhere: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/image-block/#add-an-image

If I upgrade, that will include a custom URL. How do people follow me if the address has been changed? Also, my business cards have the current URL. If people six months from now type in the old address, will they find “This page no longer exists?” I just bought an expensive order of business cards which I’ll have to throw away.

  • The old URL will automatically redirect to the new custom domain.

Is the redirect for a limited time only? If it doesn’t expire, then I can use the business cards with the old URL and not worry about it. Are the followers migrated, too? It took me years to get the few that I have.

  • Hi there,

The redirect itself is part of the subscription upgrade and will always work as long as you have your custom domain subscription and have it set as the primary domain:

    Domains

Regarding migrating subscribers, I would reach out to Blogger and see if there is an easier way to to this other than copy-paste:

    Hope this helps.

“Regarding migrating subscribers, I would reach out to Blogger and see if there is an easier way to to this other than copy-paste:”

I’m sorry, I don’t understand. The copy-paste discussion was about linking photos from Blogger to save storage space at WordPress.

Then it was recommended that I upgrade to get more storage so I was asking if my WordPress followers would be migrated from the old URL to the custom domain.

How can Blogger help with that?

  • Where are your followers located? On your WordPress.com blog or on your Blogger blog?

If they’re on your WordPress.com blog, then you don’t have to do anything if you upgrade and use a custom domain. They’ll still get all the updates.

I think I’m having a failure to communicate.

I was linking photos from Blogger to save space in my WordPress media file, and it was suggested, in order to increase storage space on my WordPress account, to simply upgrade. ( I never inquired about migrating my followers from Blogger.)

So the follow-up question was this:

If I upgrade my WordPress account — for the purpose of increasing the storage space — will readers be redirected from the old URL to the custom domain — and will my (WordPress) followers be migrated over?

I think those two questions have been answered. Redirect will work as long as the custom URL is the primary domain — and followers of the old URL will still get updates.

    I apologize for the confusion.

When you upgrade your site to a paid plan, you can register a custom domain and set it as your primary domain — visitors coming to your site at either your free .wordpress.com site address or your custom domain will still land on the same site, meaning there’s no need for any sort of migration.

You followers and subscribers will still be able to access your content, the same as ever. Hope that clarifies things.
