Media File Naming Issue / Maybe Suggest Other Site for Media
-
Hi – For my website (www.1000gentlebreezes.wordpress.com) I am now starting to include links that allow the User to download Word documents. It all works well except for one thing: When I revise the Word document and then delete it from my Media Library and then re-upload it, WordPress sometimes adds a numerical digit to the end of my file name. I searched the Forums and my understanding is that the “permanent delete” takes a few days or weeks to fully “take”, and that this is done by the system to avoid duplicate file names. Since I sometimes have a need to re-upload a file multiple times / day, I’m trying to find a solution to this as I DO want to control the names of my files. By the way, my Word documents do NOT need to be secured as they are freely available to the public. So MY QUESTIONS are: 1) Does anyone know of a work-around within WordPress.com, OR 2) Does anyone have any suggestion as to a GOOD SITE where I can store these Word documents (with the link within my WordPress site referring to that other website) in order to allow my Users to download them? Thanks very much for any help you can provide!

No, there’s no solution within WP: if you re-upload a file with the same name the same month it will get the extra number, and if you re-upload it a different month the date in the URL will be different.
A good free file hosting site that gives direct URLs (that’s rather rare) and allows replacing files is Fileden.

Hi – This is Rex again – a few days later. In case anyone later has this same question, I wanted to mention that I found a website called MediaFire for this – and so far am thrilled with them. Very inexpensive (I use the “Personal” package – I think it’s called). One hint if you use them or any other website: Your href needs to point to an actual document name for the link to automatically start the download – or at least that’s how I understand it (In MediaFire: Right-click the file name. Then click Share / More Options / URL with Filename).

You know, working with different file names/dates when you revise an uploaded file is a pain, I know, but one thing to think about is that if all the different revisions of the file are named the same, how is anyone to know which version they have?
It has always been my policy when revising files that I add a revision to the file name, and I usually do this in the form of a date. Example:
Original file: file.doc
Revised file: file-rev03152013.docJust something to ponder.

Hey – thanks. Couple comments:
1. I believe in your example file name above (if I uploaded it multiple times in a day), that the file name could become file-rev031520131.doc and file-rev031520132.doc (note the last digit) – that’s how I understand it.
2. However, I like your idea of actually putting the DATE as part of the file name. (I wouldn’t add the TIME because that level of detail is not necessary). I will consider that (when using MediaFire so I don’t get the extra digit) and appreciate the idea.
