Media files become unlinked?

  • Unknown's avatar

Why has all my linked material in my media files suddenly become unlinked on my major blogging posts?

Example: My Napoleonic rules tab has dozens of links to my media files. Why have the material suddenly become unlinked and cannot be accessed?

Still no links are showing up. The media files show the linkage to the blog post. Just there is no clickable link on the actual clicked item on the blog page/post unless it is YouTube. the YouTube links are all working but not links to data links like .pdf and .xls. Since I have a paying account for the extra media storage on my blog site this is a bit upsetting. Why pay for storage if the media cannot be accessed from my pages/posts etc by clicking the link. Everything worked fine last week.

To help clarify. The title of the linked file shows, the “* Like” button shows, but the actual file link to click on between those items doesn’t show therefore the viewer cannot click on the “blue text” and access the file.

    Anyone can help?

    Hi there!

First, I noticed you have submitted multiple requests for support. To keep our conversation organized, I’m going to respond to your questions here and close the other requests. Please keep all further correspondence in this thread.

I checked out your blog, and I want to make sure I understand correctly. For example, on this post:

Napoleonic Game Rules (Ver 2.0 Advanced game)

You have a link to a file titled “S Europe Turn Record Chart”. Currently, that file links to the following page:

    S Europe Turn Record Chart

This is the attachment page, not the page for the actual file download. It should link to this:

    Click to access s-europe-turn-record-chart.pdf

The second link is the actual file that you uploaded (the correct link).

Can you let me know a bit more about how you are inserting the links into your post?

I’m happy to investigate with a bit more information!

First a big thank you Jeremeylduvall for your support on this issue. thanks you for centralization of my requests.

Not to clear on your comments. Up till this past weekend all my links and documents on blog had no issues to retrieve and read. Been working this blog for several years and my linking process has been the same.

    1. Upload the media file to WP site. Make comments and descriptions fields as needed.
    2. While in the blog editing section I click on “Add media” and find the correct file in my media library.
    3. I then click on the “insert into post” button thus into blog page”
    4. Review the blog text and if desired highlight the link with a deeper blue color and bold in some cases.
    5. Publish the blog post.
    6. Check that the blog post links all work.

For external links (ie.. media like Youtube) I type in the identifying text words, highlight and click the “link” button and complete the linking URL information field.

Both methods have worked successfully for the last two years.

Now I have noticed that the secondary page shown after the initial click on the link (blue text) doesn’t have the blue text to link (click on) and see the require document. That second blue text field was always on the secondary page (is this what you call the “Attachment page”) and is now missing.

If I have been doing something wrong all these years then why has the linked documents been available up till this past weekend when I noticed the inoperable linking issue.

With hundreds of links in my years of blogging I cannot go back to every linked media file link and reformat the link. Something changed last weekend and I cannot fathom out why. I beg for your understanding and support as this blog is a godsend for my small gaming community of friends and fellow gamers.

Again thank you for your support

    Hi!

Now, I more fully understand the issue. It looks like there is a small issue with the attachment pages for PDFs. I believe those attachment pages should display a link to the Media File so that your readers could click to open the PDF. I’ve reported this to our developers, and I will let you know as soon as I know more!

Bang on the issue Jeremeylduvall!!!! Attachment pages not showing the blue text link to click on. Only shows the “Like” button it seems. If you review several of my documents they all have this issue/problem.

Learned what an “Attachment page” was today…..thank you.

Seems all my .pdf and MS Office files have the same issue (.xls, .doc etc)
Sorry , I still use my old MS office vintage 2003 version and not the new 2010 version. As I mentioned, Youtube links don’t have the issue.

there are several others recently on the forum reporting the same issue too. Doesn’t seem to be just my blog.

Any timeline on the problem / bug fix?

    Again a big thank you.

  • Unknown's avatar

I don’t have a timeline on the fix just yet, but I’ll keep you updated as soon as I know more!

    Thank you Jeremeylduvall.

P.S. I made a note on my blog so visitors are aware of the issue and that it is being addressed.

Any daylight or progress towards fix yet Jeremey?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hey Michael,

We’re still working on implementing a fix. I’ll let you know as soon as one is in place!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Jeremeylduvall,
Looked at my recently posted blog (yesterday) and see the .pdf links are working. Tried several other former blog posts in past and their links… same thing. Seems a fix done? Can you confirm?

    Michael aka WR and Pzduke

    Hi Michael,

It looks like this is indeed working on my side. Can you confirm that your previous links appear to be working as expected?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Jeremeylduvall,

I did several random clicks, on different blog posts (old and recent) and all the linked material appears to be functioning/opening correctly. So at this moment I say “yes”, the former inoperable links (.pdf and .xls) are working.

Thank you for your assistance. Just posted another blog post this morning and those links are working.

    Again thank you….

Great to hear! Please keep an eye out and let me know if the links start acting up again.
