Media Files in Posts & Pages Stats
-
I have a food/recipe blog hosted via a free account and on reviewing the Posts & Pages stats yesterday saw that there had been several views of particular media files (two pictures).
I can see that the URL is in a format I have not previously come across: blogname.files.wordpress.com/yyyy/mm/filename.jpg The year and month correspond to the date the media files were first uploaded, and the filename is the original name of the uploaded file (even if the file title was subsequently changed in the media manager).
I was surprised to see files being viewed that way. It wasn’t possible to see the other files in the same folders (search returning a 404 error), so I wondered why this way of viewing files is available, and why the underlying folder structure is not available in media manager (or elsewhere, unless I’ve just missed it).
Or has something gone wrong with file security or otherwise and I should be concerned?
It was odd to see one of the files accessed 7 times and the other 6 times (probably by the same person) How did they know where to look?

Hello there,
WordPress.com uses a CDN which will generate files under the structure: blogname.files.wordpress.com/yyyy/mm/filename.jpg
There are a number of ways in which this can be accessed, usually via thumbnails if the article is shared.
It’s certainly nothing to fear. :)
More information on the CDN can be found here: https://jetpack.com/features/design/content-delivery-network/
