Media files in use or not?

Is there any way to determine which media files are actually in use on published pages vs any that are not?

If you’re talking about a WordPress.com hosted site you can filter for unattached images via the /wp-admin Media Library: https://en.support.wordpress.com/media/2/

Hi folks, Hope you don’t mind me adding something to this discussion.

Is there any way to determine which media files are actually in use on published pages vs any that are not?

Unfortunately, no. A file being unattached (or attached) is not an accurate indicator of whether or not it is used in a post or page.

The time to delete unused image files is immediately after publishing the relevant post or page. There’s really no easy way to know later as time passes. You could possibly open each post or page and check for the images that were uploaded to that post or page vs what actually appears on the post or page, but again, no guarantees that you didn’t use that image someplace else on your site.

If the issue here is that you are running out of storage space (after 2 months?) please let us know and for what site. Thanks.

I was added as an admin on my company’s account 2 months ago but the site has been up for years. I recently went through and re-uploaded all of the download files we offer on our site because they needed renamed and I would like to go through and clean up the old files that we are no longer using. Just looking for the most efficient way to do this.

Hello again, all the advice that @themagicrobot and I have given you in this thread pertains to sites hosted on WordPressdotcom. Since you haven’t indicated the address of the site you are working on or confirmed it is hosted here on WordPressdotcom, it may not be relevant for you.

WordPressdotcom (where we are ) and WordPress are separate entities with different documentation and support forums. Please read https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ for better understanding.

If you still are not sure where your site is hosted, you can do a WHOIS search on your domain at https://lookup.icann.org/ and look at the name servers. Come back to us here if the name servers are wordpress.com

If your name servers say something other than wordpress.com you are using the open source WordPress software. For help with your site you’ll want to head over to the documentation and forums at https://wordpress.org/support where they have more experience with the software you are using. If you don’t have a username on the ORG forums you can register one on the top of that page.

    Best wishes
