Media files wont export with posts

I am working on a wordpress.com migration for a client and when I am exporting the whole site it wont import into the new site without timing out which it is very small, so its not size. But the media is not importing. the media within the posts is still there but it is linked back to the old wordpress.com site. Is there a way to get a manual export done that contains all the necessary files and media?

Please provide URLs and usernames the sites were registered under.
Note that when one creates and export file there are selections to make and one of them is to include all Media. Media files are attachments and when the XML export file is imported there is a prompt. You select to include attachments.
Also note that unattached media that is in a Media Library but has not been embedded into a post or page will not be included in the XML export file. So you create a post and embed all unattached Media into it prior to creating the XML export file and selecting to include all Media.

I have a client whose site I am migrating to self hosted. When exporting the site
1. the featured images aren’t coming over
2. The images within posts that come over are not in the media gallery they still show her wp.com domain file address within the postIs this a known issue and is there a work around?
Featured images are theme specific images and will not be included in any XML export file because theme files cannot be exported and imported.

Understood. I did select include media but only some of the media is imported and it still points back to the wordpress.com site.

Hi @kenyarae, when I’ve seen this it is still a timeout issue. You can try deleting affected posts (remove them from the trash too) and re-importing if you’d like. If more images come in, that’s the likely culprit.

it only completes if i only do posts. which i am fine with. but the images still have the old wordpress.com domain and they are not in the media library. they show int he post but they are pulling from the old site, and my concern is that if the old site i deleted then the images are gone.
If i try to do a full export/import it just stops and wont complete and the only thing that appears to have imported are like 9 images or so.

@kenyarae are you able to check error logs? Have you talked to your host? Have you checked the forums at https://wordpress.org/support ?
If you’d like, I can confirm the export file works by importing it into my own test installation, but I tend to think it’s something happening at the host level.
