Is there a way to password protect contents of the media library?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No. Your Media Library is not available to followers and visitors.

I understand that the media library is not available to followers and visitors, but it is available via direct access on the net. I can locate content and view it using google search. I would like to prevent this, at least for certain content containing private information which I only display on private pages.

You can create password protected and private posts and pages.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-visibility/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-visibility/Other that using those two settings, there is no way to not have Google index every image in your public site other than by making the site private so be clear on that. You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard and navigate to Settings → Reading and then scroll down to Site Visibility
To change blog visibility to private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3 .
