Media Library deletions
-
Can anybody advise me please? In my media library, I see that most pics which I have put on a post, are duplicated in the media library. i.e. there is the pic, and there is also a ‘thumbnail’ of the pic. I don’t know why this is, and I started deleting the thumbnail ones and see that the pic has disappeared on the blog posted. An example is http://dickiebo.wordpress.com/2009/08/11/well-ill-be-danged-if-it-aint/
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The pictures on a blog post are stored in the media library; they are not actually in the post. What is in a post with an image is a link to the image in the library.
If you delete images from the library, you will not see them in your post because the post is linking to something that is no longer in the library.

When you upload an image, wordpress creates a thumbnail and a medium sized image using a resize/resample program in the backend so that the picture quality when insert a thumbnail or medium sized image into a post is not left up to the browser to resize. Browser do an incredibly lousy job of resizing images. That is why you see the additional image files.

Many thanks. So, presumably, I shall have to continue doubling-up the storage-space taken.
-
You’re welcome.
The thumbnails and medium sized images they create are heavily optimized, so they should not account for much usage.

Doesn’t wp create those different sizes as needed—they are not actually stored? Are not the various sizes of images algorithms of the original image files? -
-
ok. I didn’t know that. Seems wasteful because most images are only used once.
I am no tech expert. Thanks!

I think they do it probably to prevent issues later on with trying to create a thumbnail or medium when someone goes to insert it into the post.
When you upload an image and see the “crunching” that is what is going on. They are creating the other two images.

What tsp says is correct about WordPress.org but not WordPress.com.
On wp.com blogs, thumbnails and resized images are created on the fly when they are needed and aren’t counted as part of your storage space.
I think there might be more to it with videos but as far as images are concerned, the original file you upload is the only one that matters.

Ah, has that changed? I remember a thread back when the new image uploading scheme came about where it was stated that the images were created at the time the image was uploaded.
-
Hmmm.
So what happens when I re-use an image but do not use one of their pre-determined sizes? Doesn’t wp make that image work to my size specs on the fly? -

is there an easy way to tell what in the media library is actually in a post? I have false attempts, or reloads with changes and so I end up with several “same” images, but only some of them are actually in posts in my blog:

Go to Edit the post, go to Upload something, and see what’s in the Gallery for that post.
But it’s not something you really need to worry about. I’ve been uploading an average of something like 3.5 pix a day for three and a half years and have yet to even APPROACH my limit for space. Why does it matter?
-
because on another blog (my wife’s) we uploaded images that turn out to be pretty big…as in 2.5 – 3.5 M. She is at 98% capacity.
I did a little more digging and see that there is a tab in the library that is called unattached. when I select that, does it list all files that are not currently linked to anything in my blog?
That would be a good start.
:)
