Media library not working

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,
I have recently migrated across from tumblr to wordpress as have heard great things. The first month or so has been a dream so i have long forgotten about my tumblr version of my blog and have instead starting posting directly to wordpress.

Ihave had two issues in the past two days. One is that I started to delete images from my media library as thougth it was taking up too much room before i discovered that i had deleted all of my photos from my last 30 posts. This was really upsetting as had taken me a year and there was no warning that it had a direct impact on the posts. After research I realise that there is nothing I can do so need to move forward.

Trying to keep high spirits I am now going back through every single individual post to update, however my media library is playing up and it has never done that before. Instead of uploading 10 or so images at once and then bringing them over to my post in a minute or two, it takes 10-15 mins to load one image at a time. Other times I go to insert images and my media library is completely empty. Next time, it is full again but missing the images which I had just uploaded. On the rare occassion it does manage to upload, I get an error message saying there is an error with one of my images yet it appears anyway. I have been posting on wordpress the past month or two but I am now wondering why I didnt stick with tumblr as although an inferior platform I am now stuck with my entire blog missing images and not even able to replace them.

Does anyone have an idea on how I can fix the issue with my media library. I have come to terms with the fact that I need to replace my images but I am not able to do so if it is acting like this.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!
I am sorry that you have lost so many images! I know how frustrated i get when i am “overzealous” in my cleanup efforts and have to put things back.

https://wordpress.com/media/nglandslaneblog.wordpress.com look at the top right corner and see if you have space left to add media.
It will look like this: https://cl.ly/3x412q1k1Q11

If the percentage is at or very close to 100%, you will be unable to add media.

If that is the case, you will have to either get rid of some images, or better yet, optimize them so they take up less space. That is discussed in:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/media/image-optimization/

Looking at the page information on your home page i noticed peculiar filenames where many of the images are concerned.

The image file names should be something like:
    https://i0.wp.com/englandslaneblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/04/img_97701.jpg (the Melbourne photo)

    I found many like:
data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg% /* lots of stuff removed but you get the idea */ 05-.895-2-2-2z%22%3E%3C/path%3E%3C/svg%3E
claiming to be an image type of: SVG+XML Image

You do not go into detail on how you are trying to upload the images, but i would suggest deleting any images with filenames resembling the above, and upload fresh images following the instructions in:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/media/
    and:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-media/

Give that a try and please do let us know how you get on!

    best,
    dave

    Hi dave,

    thanks for your reply.
Storage is not an issue, i am only using 16% of the 3MB. It seemed to have been the moment I deleted my images out of the library all these bugs have occured.
One of which is the images taking forever to load / not working at all. When I had no issues with this in the past.
The other is now my actual posts are not formatting correctly. For instance, when I edit my post to have my images at a certain place in my blog, then apper up the top and completely stretched across the page. (is there a way i can show screenshots here? otherwise you can reference https://englandslaneblog.wordpress.com/2016/10/01/dorset-uk-bournemoth-swanage-we-took-a-sneaky/ where the image block at the top is meant to come after the first two paragraphs which is where it shows in my edit function.

I just need to know whether these bugs will go away as I dont want to start the arduous process of fixing all of my posts if these issues are going to continue to happen. It is making an already time-consuing process so much longer than it should be.

    Thanks
    Rachel

    Hi Rachel

One of which is the images taking forever to load / not working at all. When I had no issues with this in the past.

I believe that the problem you are experiencing with loading the images is as i talked about earlier – the files you are trying to upload do not appear to be images – that is what the missing image file names on your home page suggest.

    From:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/images/

You can upload the following image types to a post or page on your WordPress.com blog:

    .jpg/.jpeg
    .gif
    .png

The other is now my actual posts are not formatting correctly. For instance, when I edit my post to have my images at a certain place in my blog, then apper up the top and completely stretched across the page

That has to do with the post format you have selected to display your posts, and is a characteristic of the Revelar theme you are using!

You can learn about the different types of Post Formats in:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-formats/

The Revelar Theme page where you can learn more about your Theme is:
    https://wordpress.com/theme/revelar

I suspect too that your browser might be playing a role in all this. At the very least, try clearing your browser cache as discussed in:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache

I know it appears like quite a daunting task to rebuild everything, but the suggestions i have given you should make it easier than it seems at first look.

Uploading proper images, setting the post formats correctly, and using the Themes features should take care of it.

    best,
    dave

Hi dave, I have attemptd to continue to update my blog but am having the same issues. I have renamed the images, and ensured they are jpegs. i have also cleared the cache on my browser. The issue is wordpress because i have tried two different computers, operating systems and browsers. It is an issue that I wasnt happenign before.

This issue keeps saying '1 file could not be uploaded because an error occurred while uploading.'
This appears no matter what. If i load 5 images, only 1 will load and the other 4 will be on a continuous loop. If i try loading one image, i will get the same error message, although it will actually load. I cannot get by on uploading 1 image at a time. I am just at a loss as to why this is happening, it worked perfecty before I deleted that bunch of images out of my media library.

    Thanks
    Rachel

    Hi Rachel
I do not believe that simply renaming the files is going to fix the underlying issue, especially if the “image” files were not of one of the acceptable types to begin with.

WordPress uses XML files as part of the Export/Import process. The process is not a simple copying of all the files from one place and pasting them somewhere else.

I found a decent explanation of the Export/Import process at:
    https://devtidbits.com/2011/03/16/the-wordpress-extended-rss-wxr-exportimport-xml-document-format-decoded-and-explained/

If you are curious about why your .XML files are not your images..

If the problem was on the WordPress end of things, the forums would be flooded with this very same question from thousands of people!

At this point i too am at a loss of how to get you up and running – which is a shame since i was looking forward to seeing your site when it is done.

Again, the advice in my last reply is the best i can offer.

    Best,
    dave

  • Hi folks, Dave’s advice is right.

@englandslaneblog, to fix this you will want to edit each post, remove the broken image, then upload a replacement image. Just uploading the images won’t be enough since the posts will need to be fixed as well. Sorry about that :(

1 file could not be uploaded because an error occurred while uploading

This could be a problem with the file format or with the internet connection. You mentioned the image does load, though, in spite of the error. If you’ll link me to an image that had this issue, I’ll take a look.

  • Also just to be clear, when you deleted the media, it stopped working on the site. It may have continued to work for a day or two due to caching, but the problem is that the images no longer exist on your account. They need to be re-added, and the posts that reference the deleted images need to be fixed.

    Hi both,

Thanks for your help. How exactly do I remove the broken image? I can see the broken image in my ‘Preview window’ however when I go back into the text editor I cannot see anywhere that the image would be. Even if i delete the <gallery> part in the html it doesnt seem to fix it.

I think there are two seperate issues because the other one seems to be related to the media library only rather than specific blog posts. I am aware that when I deleted the media it stopped working, these issues are occuring now in the process of being re-added. The files I am adding are jpegs so I am not sure as to why to get them into the media library I now have to add them one by one? Before I deleted the images, I was able to upload 10+ images at a time into the media library. Sometimes when I go into the library there are only grey boxes. Is this because there is an image in the media library which is wrong? i just dont understand how it can be wrong now when I have been conducting the same processs for the past 3 months and it was so easy before and now it is so painful.

Help would be great. I really loved my blog before and it just seems like such a headache at the moment.

    Thanks. Rachel

  • @englandslaneblog the images in the media library are not separate from the ones in your posts. The problem with the posts is that you got rid of the items in the media library.

Can you send a link to a broken post? I’ll walk you through what needs to happen. The posts that are broken will be the one that used images you deleted.
