media library search does not work
-
If I go to my media library, I can see all my images there no problem. But if I try to search for a image file name such as
anisette-cookie-mid-banner.jpg
It just comes up and find nothing but I know the file is there. It does this for all image files I search for. The image file is there in the media library but if I search for it , it finds nothing every time.
Any ideas?

Hi,
I wasn’t able to reproduce this error. If I search for the full title of an image at the media library, the result is the image with that title. -
Does not matter which image file I search for. No matter what, I just get “No media attachments found”.
Now, this is very strange i think.
For example. If I search for this image file which is in my media library:
“anisette-cookie-mid-banner.jpg”
nothing is found.
But if I search for just a key word like
“anisette”
then all the images with the word “anisette” to show up.
Strangeness.
OH!!! I get it! It’s a key word search only….
In other words if I search for the file name:
chicken_cutlet_mid-banner
nothing shows up.
But if I search for the key phrase:
Chicken Cutlet
Then all the images with those key words in the file name show up.
Ok well that’s interesting. At least I know how to use the search now. :-)

Glad you found a workaround. But, in fact, I used the entire title on my tests and found that it in each case the search found the image with that title. For example, a search on the title “Under a Texas Moon (1930) poster 1-c2(p130)” in my media library finds the image with that title. I also had the same result with searches for hyphenated titles.

well, not here. I have to use key word only. Seems if I use the complete image file name with underscores or hyphens, then it finds nothing.

Understood. If you would like to discuss the issue with WordPress staff, you may add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic to call for staff attention, then wait for one of them to respond.

Are you using a filter when you do those searches? I’ve sometime been unable to locate an image with a keyword search until I notice that I’d inadvertently set a filter and forgotten to remove it.
-
I mean I’ll sometimes set a filter intentionally for one search, but later forget to remove the filter for an unrelated search.

no, does not find it with that search option either. Have to use key words, cannot use the actual file name for search.

Hi Tony,
You are correct that the “filename” filed is not checked when searching for an image. We instead check the title, caption, description, and alt text fields.
-
But if I try to search for a image file name such as anisette-cookie-mid-banner.jpg It just comes up and find nothing but I know the file is there.
Thanks, bdukes. I misread the original OP, and mistakenly thought Tony was referring to image titles rather than file names.

yes, this is what I am discovering. It’s a bummer because as I am just now going through and carefully adding tiles, captions, descriptions, etc… I have to find the file name first and then add the titles/captions. Most of my images don’t have these yet in my ignorance…. Again, I did not know about the image attachment pages as I dove into wordpress with my eyes closed ;-)
So I am doing everything backwards and the hard way. Oh well. So I have 1,500 images, many of them not given titles and captions, so I have to sift through and find the actual file by file name first and THEN add the tiles and captions and THEN when I search I will find them.
I was hoping hat maybe it would pick up key words in the file names but nope…. now it makes total sense why many images were not coming up in search. Now title, no caption = nothing found.
ok – got it.

Wow, his is like searching for a needle in a hay stack. Maybe you all can give me some advise:
I want to find an image file in my media library so I can add title and caption.
I have 1,500 images. I am looking for a file with this name:
002.jpg no title and no caption AND I cannot organize the media files in alphabetical order. Or reorder by file name…. wow!
I have just spent 10 minutes trying to find the image file 002.jpg in my media library and I have not found it yet. wow!!!
This is a little nightmarish.

and that is just ONE of so many more to go.
There must be some way to streamline or automate this.
