Media query
-
Not sure if this is supposed to be, but when I select ‘Media’ from my dashboard I can see all the images I have uploaded to my blog. However most images seem to have at least one duplicate and some have even more. They don’t seem to take up much space, but I was wondering what would happen if I deleted one of the duplicates.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
It appears that the duplicate image in each case has
_thumbappended to the end, and is a thumbnail-sized version of the image. This thumbnail image is being used as the embedded file in the post for all the ones I’ve checked, so deleting that version of the image will cause the image to disappear from the post. But the full-size version’s URL is used as the Link To URL for the image, so if you delete that, clicking on an image will lead to a 404 error page, instead of opening the full-sized image.
So before you delete anything, you’d need to manually go through all your posts and make sure the
img srctag and thea hreftag in the HTML are both using the same URL for each image.I’d very much like to figure out where these duplicates are coming from, though, as this shouldn’t be happening.
Can you please take me through the steps you follow to add images, starting at which editor you’re using? I’ve tried uploading a new image file to a new post and setting it to thumbnail, but aren’t seeing the duplication that’s happening on your site.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. I usually use Open Live Writer as my editor on my laptop. Sometimes use Blogpad Pro on my iPad and very occasionally the WordPress block editor. It seems to happen whatever I use.
I insert the image into the text of the post, in the desired position (usually either right or left justified) and they tend, but not always to be jpg or png files.

So, do you mean that you create your post and add images in Open Live Writer or other program and then copy paste it to WordPress.com editor?
-
No, both Open Live Writer and Blogpad Pro can post directly to my site. However, I usually post as draft, then open my site, preview and check it is what I want then publish the post.

Hi there,
I think that those applications are creating those thumbnail images. If you like desktop apps to compose your posts I highly recommend using the official WordPress.com app which doesn’t create such additional files.

A quick test and the problem seems to have been resolved. However, I will test again with a future post.
Thankyou

All seems to be working fine, using the WordPress.com app. Case closed I think.
Many thanks
