Hi,
Of the images I’ve looked at in the latest post, it looks like someone or something has edited the image URLs, removing the date, and perhaps other parts, from either the media file URL, or the permalink/attachment page URL, and linked each of the images to a non-existent custom URL.
Example:
The image https://socalhunt.files.wordpress.com/2016/10/img_5661.jpg?w=300&h=240, a scaled version of the file image https://socalhunt.files.wordpress.com/2016/10/img_5661.jpg, is linked to the non-existent custom URL https://socalhunt.wordpress.com/img_5661/. -
Clarification:
It is the link URLs, not the image URLs, that have evidently been edited, creating non-existent URLs.

Ok, understood but how do I fix it? When I upload pictures to my media library and then add that picture to a blog post WordPress generates the URL for the thumbnail posted in the blog entry to refer back to the full sized picture. Apparently my Media library isn’t creating the correct URL.

If you haven’t edited the link URLs of the images on this post “Third Volunteer Work Party at San Jacinto Wildlife Area Another Big Success,” then I’ve no explanation for the result you’ve obtained. I’d suggest that you add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic to call for WordPress.com staff attention.

Hi there,
I see this has been happening quite far back on your site. Can you please walk me through the exact steps you follow when adding an image to your site? Do you use the Add Media button and then upload the image, or do you first upload the image directly to the library and then add it in the post?
Also please tell me what browser you are using, and if you use the WP-Admin editor or the editor at My Sites ->Post.

My usual procedure after signing in is to go to the WP Admin page and click on media then click ad media. I then drag what photos I want in my media library from my desktop into the media library upload box. Once they are uploaded I then, sometimes right away, or sometimes later, (depending if I have the text ready to post or not) click on posts and then click add new and enter my text. Normally this is done by cut and past from a MS Word file. After my text is there I then go through the post and use the add media button at the box that I just pasted the media to. Once the media thumbnails are posted where I want I then click the Publish button and that’s it. Thumbnails are in the post but when clicked on the 404 error message comes up.

Thank you for that detailed description. It has helped me spot the problem.
If you go to Posts ->All Posts and edit a post there, click on an image, and click the Pencil icon. You’ll see an overlay that looks like this:

As I pointed out on that image, your images are set to point to a custom link. At one point you must have linked an image to a custom URL, and then the editor “remembered” that setting with subsequent images, but because you didn’t add a custom link to subsequent images the editor had to “guess” at the link.
If you change that setting to Media File, the images will correctly link to the full size version.
I’m afraid there’s no automatic way to fix this, so you’ll need to edit the affected posts and click on each image in turn to edit that setting. But, with you next new post, when you insert the first image, make sure to also select that setting before the image is inserted. Then the editor will remember the new setting for subsequent images.
Let me know if any of this is unclear.

kookier,
Thanks! That was the problem. I went back and fixed the last few posts and going forward I’ll make sure to check this when I post pictures. Thanks again!
