If you delete any media from your media library then it will not longer be on WordPress.com servers. Therefore when any visitors browsers calls for the media to be displayed in post, pages, etc. the media cannot be displayed and they will see nothing at all. See here https://en.support.wordpress.com/space-upgrade/

If you originally uploaded full size images that ate up your storage space, you can use the “replace image” function in the advanced image settings to upload a smaller, optimized version of the image and then delete the original image. Don’t bother with WPcom’s built-in resize image function, as that won’t help you reclaim storage space.
Barring that, spring for the Space upgrade at US$20/year. That will give you another 10GB of storage. Since your account is 6 years old, you should see the Space upgrade as an individual upgrade in your site’s Dashboard>Store. That will allow you to continue to create Galleries or use Featured Images in your posts.
If you aren’t using either the Gallery feature or Featured Images, you could just create another WPcom site and hotlink your images from there via “Insert by URL”. Since according to WPcom’s new user guidelines you can’t use a site solely for the purpose of hotlinking, so you’ll need to actually post something there from time to time.
