members only area on wordpress.com site

I would like to include a members-only area on the site I am establishing. Several forum posts suggest this may not be possible but I found the following staff comment from 2013:

Within WordPress.com, you can setup a second site that is set to “private”. Only users that you have invited will be able to see that site.
To do so, visit the My Blogs link at the top of WordPress.com (direct link: http://wordpress.com/my-blogs/ ) and use the link there to create your second site. Once it is created, you can change the visibility settings via the Settings->Reading page of the new site’s dashboard.
From the Users tab in the new site’s dashboard, you can then invite other folks to view your site.
There are other options for folks on the self-hosted WordPress.org, depending on how advanced you’d like a member’s only area to be (more about the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org)
If you have any questions or need anything else, please let me know. Cheers!”
The option of a second linked site sounds good but my WordPress site doesn’t have a My Blogs menu, and I don’t see an option in the My Sites menu. Can a staff member or moderator kindly update and if possible elaborate this advice? Thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
There have been more than a few changes since that workaround was suggested in 2013, but the basic idea should still work.
To create a new site you can use this link:
https://wordpress.com/start/site/
Once the site is created, go to My Site ->Settings ->Privacy to set the site to private, and My Site ->People ->Add to invite people to become viewers on the site.
