Menu

On my home page I created some buttons. The buttons have links to pages (just two for now until I understand what I am doing wrong). When I click on button and it goes to the page, at the top are all the pages that when clicked go to the pages. I don’t want those linked pages to appear at top.

Another thing, I have been trying to work with Appearance-theme-edit-customize etc. and nowhere is Menus listed. I am not even sure it is a menu as defined, it is more of a link to a page.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Good Morning –

This project is off to a great start. The black buttons on the front page are working for me. In order to better advise about how to set this up I will ask if you can share more details about what goals you have. Is there an example of a site you’d like to replicate?

Some themes do use a more classic menu which you would find in the editor as described. The newer options will utilize a navigation block instead.

With a Navigation block, you can place a menu of links on any page to help your visitors navigate to other parts of your site or even through sections within the same page. A Navigation block is a great way to include navigation within your site pages or posts. Interested in adding a menu that will appear in the same location on all pages, like your header or footer? There’s not a right or wrong option. Just your preference for the work. All of the theme options can be seen at https://wordpress.com/themes/ and that’s a helpful place to browser based on feature or style.

Thanks Zinnia, I was thinking I was not going to get a response. I have watched so many help videos my head is spinning, my dashboard is not exactly like the videos, especially the “Appearance” that has no Menu listed. Yes, I have two sites, and I am going to keep the one that I purchased the Personal with no advertising. My problems began when I did an export-import so as not to start all over. I had all these what looked like menus at the top of the page that where linked to my pages (same links as my buttons). I couldn’t get rid of them and I was almost ready to give up and start fresh. None of the video’s were helping and AI did not have an answer. In the meantime, I did not give up and just started “hacking away” until I got it to where it is now. I am not sure I have learned anything during the “hacking” process, except there must be more that one way to do things. There went a whole day, I will never get back.

In the meantime, I have to stop working on this project for a few day and I will be away from a Internet connection and a computer. My goals are hard to explain other than I want to share my knowledge about genealogy and family history, I have not seen much in WordPress for genealogy, I do know that there are other places that specialize. I linked one of my cousins sites in my site that uses “second site” to build. I have heard of “square space”. I don’t think I want to “blog”, I am not sure. You might have figured out that I am new at this website thing and I don’t give up easy. I used to think a block was a couple of streets around the corner.

Thanks for your response and I will take a closer look at the Navigation Block. I will be back at it in a few days.

  • Let’s take this one piece at a time. It sounds like what you were seeing with the import-export process was one of those more traditional themes. It’s hard to know exactly since I wasn’t there looking at it with you at the time.

Moving forward, all we really need to know is how you want things to look. We can provide you with personalized help and also send links to any of our support documentation (these often have videos).

The Appearance section is different when using one of the blank theme options. They really are a blank canvas that you can do anything with. The more traditional options give a bit more guidance because of how they’re structured.
