Menu Bar tabs not right

Thanks for all the help adjusting the space between the title and the header and below the menu bar.

When I look at my site on the computer I’m working on, everything looks fine. When I open it on another computer, the menu bar doesn’t look right – too big, tabs not looking right. Can this happen if an updated version of IE is not being used? Could there be another reason, or a way I can adjust for older versions of browsers?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

We need a link to the site you are talking about.

Generally though, all browsers render things differently so things are going to look different in different browsers. Also, some of the more advanced CSS3 stuff that is in some of the themes here is not supported in IE yet. Other browsers have supported a lot of the CSS3 stuff for years actually, but MS is always behind the times it seems on those things.

Is this the blog in question? http://santaanagateteachers.wordpress.com/ If so its private so the amount of help you can receive will be minimal as we can’t see it. To check browser compatibility on a variety of browsers please see here > http://browsershots.org

When you say, “tabs not looking right,” can you explain that a little more? The length of your menu (all the tabs) is right near the maximum, and some browsers might push the one on the right end to a second line.

How each browser shows a web page is also dependent on browser preferences and settings also. I have a friend that sets their browser to display everything at a +1 zoom level, which can also cause the menu bar on your site to go to two lines. Some people also set a different font size in their preference (larger than the default 16) and that can cause the same thing.

The last tab goes to the second row – actually it’s like the fourth row because the text on the penultimate tab displays each word on a different row. The settings for the zoom level and font size seem okay. That doesn’t seem to be the problem.

I checked out browsershots.org (wow – great site – thanks for the reference) and it definitely seem to be a browser issue, although browsershots shows IE7 on WindowsXP and not on Vista. I know IE7 is old, but I’ve never noticed this problem before with other sites I regularly visit on that computer – just with my site.

My menu bar doesn’t even look like a bar on Netscape. It just makes a vertical list, leaving no room for the posts. The menu bar looks very different depending on the browswer.

Maybe I should make fewer tabs, or use a combination menu and category widget?

The other thing is that twenty eleven is semi flexible width. If you grab widen and narrow the browser window you can get the same thing, so another factor in all this is screen resolution in the horizontal.

I don’t see a penultimate tab. What site are you talking about again?

I meant penultimate as in second to last. I just moved “Planning” to “General” and shortened the names of some of the other tabs. That works for me, and it works for IE7 on WindowsVista, so all is well. I’ll check again with browsershots.org and see how things look now in the other browsers.

Thank you, again. You guys have helped me so much in the last few days. .I’m really grateful.

D’oh! I didn’t even think of “second to last,” I was thinking a tab label, but it sounds like you have a workable solution.

    And you are welcome.
