Hi myhairtherapy
To change the menu color you need to add custom CSS code given below:
ul#primary-menu li a { color: black; }But to add custom CSS code you should be under premium or business plan. To know more about the plans please refer :

As @shubhamgmath explained, you would need to purchase either the Premium or Business upgrade plan in order to use Custom CSS. However, Independent Publisher 2 also has six different color palettes that you can use without needing to upgrade.
When you are in the Customizer, select Colors & Backgrounds and then click on Palettes (temp screenshot) That will open a second screen in that panel (temp screenshot). Click on each to see how it changes your theme display and if you find one you like, click it and then publish your changes.
Also worth noting that even if you pick a certain palette but don’t like the background color, you can still select the palette and then change the background color manually in the earlier screen.
Keep text readability in mind when making your choices.
Hope that helps.
