Menu Options vs. Site Pages

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, my drop down menus on the website I’m managing are different than the site pages or page attributes that are available.
    1. Basically I am trying to put a page under one of the menu subheadings, yet when I am looking at the page settings >> page attributes, the drop down menu item is not available in that list.
    2. In general, on the left column that appears when editing the site, I only have the options to add sight pages, and add blog pages. Yet I do not have the option to add/remove/edit any menu items. Moreover I do not see where the current menu items are stored.
Any help on how to fix this would be appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi taladaya,

Basically I am trying to put a page under one of the menu subheadings

Which heading would you like to add a page under in your menu? And which page would you like to link to?

I only have the options to add sight pages, and add blog pages. Yet I do not have the option to add/remove/edit any menu items.

So I can better understand what you are seeing, it would be great if you could make a screenshot of the page and upload it to your Media Library. Once you’ve done that, I can take a closer look :)

    Thanks!

I am probably tired and therefore my brain isn’t working but I can not get my posts properly categorized under my primary menu headings. Can someone please help me figure out how to place my latest blog under my recipe menu and how to get my blogs under the blog menu. Please. Thank you. I am not sure why this is so confusing.

    Hi Gemma,

Thank you for getting back to me so quick.

I was able to move one of my pages into a subheadings so I no longer need help with question #1.

For question 2, I’ve uploaded two screenshots.
    a. The first screen shot shows that my editing menu does not have a button to add/remove/edit menu items (https://bcgctest.files.wordpress.com/2017/10/editing-menu.png).

    b. The second part to this question, are my pages the same as my menu options? So if I want to add a new Menu drop down do I add it as a page from the editing menu depicted in the first screen shot? (https://bcgctest.files.wordpress.com/2017/10/pages-vs-menu.png)

    Thanks again for your help!

    Best,
    Tala

    Hi Tala,

The first screen shot shows that my editing menu does not have a button to add/remove/edit menu items

Yes, that’s correct. The taladaya account you are currently logged in to is only an Editor on bcgc.berkeley.edu. To have full access to the site and editing options, you will need to login as tmckeagberkeleyedu. Once you’ve done so, you should see the option to make changes to the menu.

So if I want to add a new Menu drop down do I add it as a page from the editing menu depicted in the first screen shot?

The Page Widget is being used to list your site’s pages in the left hand sidebar. This widget should automatically display new pages added to your site. Is that what you needed to know or were you asking about a drop down menu at the top of the site?

I hope this helps but I’m happy to answer any other questions you have.

    Hi Gemma,

Thank you, your reply is very helpful!

For screenshot 2, I was asking about adding a drop down menu at the top of the site. I was wondering if I add a page would that be the same as adding a drop down menu? I’m assuming not, and I would have to do it through tmckeagberkeleyedu account. Is this correct?

Also I guess one more question that I now have- can I edit the page widget or is that also not a feature on my account?

Thanks again for all your help!

    Hi Tala,

I was wondering if I add a page would that be the same as adding a drop down menu?

The two are slightly different. The Page Widget should automatically add any new pages to the left sidebar. Sub pages will need to be added to the Primary (top) menu manually but there is an option to add any new top-level pages to this menu automatically:

    1. Go to My Sites > Customise > Menus
    2. Click Primary
    3. Go down to Menu Options
    4. Check, ‘Automatically add new top-level pages to this menu’
    5. Click Save & Publish

Also I guess one more question that I now have- can I edit the page widget or is that also not a feature on my account?

You’ll need to be logged in as tmckeagberkeleyedu to edit the page widgets too.
