menu pages in Navigation

  I have a problem with the pages I’m adding to 2 menus. The page titles are appearing in the blog navigation….which I don’t want.
  I need to add about 50 pages to 2 menus, and to have those page titles in the navigation is a mess. I just want the titles to appear in the menus, so people can then click to those pages from the menus.

  Any ideas?

  The only themes that have 2 custom menus are Beach and Enterprise. You are using Twenty Ten. In a custom menu you can exclude ot include pages and subpages as you so choose. See here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

  What I’m wondering is what useful purpose creating so many pages will serve because in terms of SEO and pageranking it’s not a good choice to make.   SEO is unimportant. I just need to get a bunch of data published.

  So here’s what I need, and maybe this explanation is a better approach…

  I need to list 50 pages that need to be divided within 2 different categories (excuse my terminology….I’m using these terms as layman’s terms and not exactly as WP defines them).

  I can’t have the titles of these pages show up along the top of the blog within the Navigation. Way too messy and confusing.

  What’s the best way to get this done?

  Create a custom menu. In a custom menu you can exclude or include pages and subpages as you so choose. See here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

  1. You create a custom menu. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

  2. You add the top level pages you want and arrange them as you desire.

  3. Do NOT add any subpages (the link covers how to do that if you want to at a later date).

  4. When you have everything in the menu that you want (and nothing you do not want), save the menu.

  5. Go to the “theme location” module at upper left on the menu page. Select your custom menu name from the pulldown labeled “primary location.” Click the save button in that module.

  6. Go to your blog, refresh your browser so that it isn’t possibly pulling a cached page, and see your new menu without sub menus

  What you might want to do is create three custom menus. The first you could use for the top navigation and only include the pages you want there (home link, about, etc.).

  Create two additional custom menus for the two different categories of pages you have and then add the pages for each category of page to that menu. Then, use two custom menu widgets in the sidebar and assign the two different menus to those custom menu widgets.

  This would help to keep the top navigation from getting crazy and would group the other pages together for easier navigation.

  Here’s what I’m looking to achieve:

  1. 2 lists of links going vertically down the blog as seen here. “Fairfax Students”, “Mill Valley Students”.

  2. I need to add pages to each of those columns. About 20-30 each. I have 3-4 in there now as placeholder.

  Sacred one….I see where you’re going with that.

  So I’m starting to realize that you need one of the menus to “behave” as the navigation….no way around that.

  Is that correct?

  I would create a main navigation custom menu for the top. It would have things like a home, contact us.

  I would create a custom menu for fairfax and one for mill and then add the pages for each of those to those custom menus. Then put two custom menu widgets into the sidebar. In one, set fairfax as the custom menu to display. In the other one select mill.

  That’s exactly what I did.
  Leaving the 3rd menu out of the widget process was the key.

  That worked.
