Menu, posts and pages

  • Unknown's avatar

When I added and rearranged my menu some of the links on the menu item automatically went to my post page and I don’t know how to fix it other than to make all my posts into pages. So, three questions. How do I fix the menu items from going to the wrong posts? How do I change a post into a page? And how do I change a page into a post?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Good Morning –

Posts can be added to your menu. That’s not an issue.

    Go to https://wordpress.com/customize/nancygore.wordpress.com

Or click on My Sites – Design – Customize – Menu – Primary Menu

There you’ll see that there are already some posts and pages included in that menu.

Which posts are you struggling to get added? I’ll be happy to give it a go from my side.

Thanks for your reply. I’m very much a newbie here so please forgive me if I’m asking silly questions or not asking them well!

My problem is that my Contact menu item is now going to my post page and this started right after I fixed a different menu item from going to my post page, (I think it has something to do with static vs fixed? placement of items).

Sooo how do I fix the menu items from going to the wrong posts? How do I change a post into a page? And how do I change a page into a post?

PS I see that my forum post automatically added my blog address and that you were able to see some of my blog, which is okay except it makes me worry it’s not private. Help?

  • No problem. We will get this sorted out.

Yes, I can see your blog because I am an employee. This allows us to help you with troubleshooting.

Let’s back up to the beginning.

On the front page of your blog – this is what a visitor will load first on their browser… Do you want it to show a page with static information or a list of your blog posts?

If you’d like it to show static information, then which page should we assign to be there? And which page do you want your posts to be published on?

    Set the Homepage

Once we have that ironed out we can move on to the contact page issue.

ah… thanks for explaining that :-)

Yes, I’d like the front page of my blog to be a static page, the Home page called Personal and Family Stories that has my blurb about the blog itself.

  • Thanks :) So, you have the front page set correctly. Go to My Sites – Manage – Settings – Reading ….

From there you’ll see that you have the Front page assigned as Personal and Family Stories.

You’re also going to see that the blog page is designated as the Contact page. This is where you’re running in to trouble.

What page do you want your posts to be published on?

  • Unknown's avatar

I don’t see Reading as an option under settings. From My Sites- Manage-Settings – these are the options I see

    General
    Performance
    Writing
    Discussion

  • Hi there,

That option is not in settings. It’s in the Customizer, under Homepage Settings.

Go to that screen, and set the page that you want to show your blog posts as the Posts Page.

Okay- I think I got that worked out. Thank you! But now I just posted a new story and it’s acting very weird too. Sigh! Help?

  • Please send a link to the new story. Thanks.

OOOps- I thought I had sent it already –

    https://wordpress.com/block-editor/post/nancygore.wordpress.com/148

2 problems with this one- it’s asking me for a password and not accepting the one I assigned and it’s also popping up when I click on the menu item for “Too Much History”

PS- can you guide me to information about the differences between posts and pages? I’m thinking that Pages is more of what I should be using since they are stand alone stories.

That is a link for the post in the editor. Only you have access to that, and that link should not be asking you for any password.

If you go to that link, click on the Document tab and click on the “Password Protected” link in the Visibility section, you’ll be able to see what password you have set for that post.

and it’s also popping up when I click on the menu item for “Too Much History”

The “Too Much History” page is set as your site’s posts page, so that menu link is the one you click to see all published posts on your site. If you don’t want that link to show a list of all your posts, you need to set a different page as the posts page.

PS- can you guide me to information about the differences between posts and pages? I’m thinking that Pages is more of what I should be using since they are stand alone stories.

No, you should not be using Pages.

Pages are meant for static content that you always want your site visitors to be able to easily find, something like an About page telling people about you or about your site, or a Contact page with a form people can use to contact you privately. Pages are typically added to the site menu so they can easily be found, and subscribers to your site are not notified when you publish or modify a page.

Posts are meant for stories, news, or updates. Those appear in a feed on your site, with the newest one always appearing at the top, and people can follow that feed so they’re notified whenever a new post is published on your site. Posts can be added to the menu, but for the most part they shouldn’t be added to the menu – the menu is not designed to be an index of your regular updates on the site.
