menu stopped adding pages
-
Hello. Hope you’re well. I have been clicking away at my new site and the menu has been consistently been updating after I add a page in the appearance>customize>menu section. after many adjustments it stopped adding the pages. I have to go into the block and change the menu. I select the custom menu I made under classic menus section to get the update/add pages to show up. It produces a new menu every time I add a page now. I keep adding and then manually updating the menu in my header and then manage menus and delete all the extra menus that are being created. Please help. I hope it is just a setting. Thank you so much.

Hi there,
after many adjustments it stopped adding the pages.
Can you expand on this a bit? I just tried adding a new page to that menu (using the Add Item button in the Customizer) and it worked fine for me. Are you using a different method, or are you getting an error when you try?
I have to go into the block and change the menu.
You’re speaking of editing the navigation block directly, correct? Using the site editor at Appearance ->Editor?
It produces a new menu every time I add a page now.
This is strange. Can you walk me through the exact steps you’re following to create a page, that leads to an entirely new menu being created?
Just making a guess here, are you perhaps editing the menu in the navigation block and selecting the Create New Menu option? If so, that option is to create an entirely new menu, not to add an item to an existing menu. To add an item you use the + button in the block instead.

Ah, that seems like an incredibly odd bug, thanks for noticing!
In this case, since your site uses Full Site Editing, I recommend making changes going forward in the Navigation Block itself: https://wordpress.com/support/full-site-editing/theme-blocks/navigation-block/#add-links-to-your-navigation
Obviously, this should work as you’ve shown, but for now, editing the Navigation Block directly will work.

Thank you so very much. That worked like a charm. Thank you for your time. Have an excellent day.

Okay. I am struggling with my menu again. I have made the changes within the block like was suggested and it was working nicely, but then… the menu stopped loading all together. Tried different pcs, different browsers. It won’t load. Went through appearance > menus and the changes weren’t updating as I was making the changes in the block. I played with the menu within the appearance section and it wouldn’t let me save my changes. Thank you so much for your help.

After taking a closer look, I noticed that your menu has many more links than is typical for most sites. I counted 206 page links in total, nested in several drop-downs. This is a lot of data for any web app to crunch, especially with something with as many moving pieces as a website menu.
We are happy to report this issue to our engineers, but if I’m honest, that many links would cause any website menu system to struggle. This is not strictly a WordPress issue, but one that might happen on other website platforms too. This is especially true of mobile visitors, as a menu of this size is difficult for site visitors to navigate on a small screen like a smartphone.
With this in mind, do you have the option to reduce the number of links in your menu? For example, you could set up a visual landing page for each “series” you offer, like a main landing page for Evolution Series products. There are ways that you could set up that page to provide a visual index (grid) of all the related products under that series.
This would be easier for visitors to your site and mean that you would not need to add every individual product to the menu directly.

Hi again,
One question I have is about your site itself. Are you intending to eventually add ecommerce to this site? For the moment it appears to be more of an online catalog (with no actual commerce) but for a site of this kind we often recommend you start by using the ecommerce system to manage your catalog pages.
For example an ecommerce plugin (like WooCommerce) would allow you to add all your catalog items as products, and from there you would be able to hide the typical “add to cart” features to use it strictly for managing your catalog.
The advantage to doing it this way is that you can add categories and tags to your individual products, and leverage WooCommerce’s ability to easily show groups of products on “product category pages” that would have nice visual appeal, be easy to set up, and down the road if/when you decide to add ecommerce you would just need to set up a payment processor and flip the switch to start taking orders online.
If you are curious, we have a free webinar on WooCommerce later in the week that you could drop in on and see how it may be easier to manage your site using that tool instead: https://wordpress.com/webinars/quick-start-woocommerce-101/
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
