Menu structure not saving

  • Unknown's avatar

I am adding new pages to my primary menu, and ‘nesting’ them under their parent page (which has been defined on the pages themselves – i.e. they have a parent page) but when I click save they are not nesting. Instead, they are being saved as parent pages.

No matter how many times I select the menu items and place them under their parent page, or that I click ‘under x’ they do that – they become ‘sub items’ – but as soon as I click save they become parent pages.

Some info: I am using the Spun theme

All the other menu pages work fine – they are nestled where they are supposed to be nestled. I’ve never had any issues before about menu items.

    Help!

    Hi,

Have you set up a custom menu? In my experience a custom menu overrides the hierarchy you’ve set at the page level. Check here for more info:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

    Hope that helps. :)

Hello – yes, sorry, I should have specified = it’s a custom menu I’m using.

I’ve also created another menu and the same is happening again.

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay…then I know this might sound silly, but you are hitting the “save menu” button afterwards, correct?

After you hit save does the menu structure remain as you’ve “saved” it?

And if the answer is yes to all of the above, have you tried clearing your browser cache and cookies? Sometimes I make changes that aren’t immediately noticeable.

The other thing you might want to consider is leaving the box “Automatically add new top-level pages to this menu” unchecked. You will have to automatically place every page you add, but it gives you full control over the menu.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes – it’s clicking the ‘save menu’ that kicks the menu items out from being ‘sub item’s and in to being primary menu items.

I’ve cleared cache and cookies – still happening!

  • Unknown's avatar

I should probably add that all the pages are sub pages – they are listed as having parent pages in ‘page attributes’

I’ve managed to create the entire site till now without this kind of weirdness – so I’m really unsure why it’s decided to do it now!

I see what you mean…all of your “Discussions” are showing as top level instead of sub-menu like the rest.

Try deleting all of those pages in the menu then hit save. If it behaves then add them and hit save again.

You also might want to log out from your dashboard, clear your cache again and log back in to sort of “reset” WordPress.

re: changing the order of Pages, not Posts

    There are two approaches.
    1. If you have only pages in your horizontal menu and that’ is all you want in it see here to use numerical order. http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-attributes/#order

    2. Creating a Custom Menu http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#creating-a-custom-menu
    Adding Pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-pages
    Changing the Order & Creating Sub-Menus http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#changing-the-order-creating-sub-menus

Custom menu Troubleshooting – My pages are in the wrong order
Check the sub-pages themselves to see if you have established a Parent page and child page “hierarchical structure” in the page attributes module. Remove if required.

Also remove any “order” numbers you have assigned that may conflict with the order you are creating by dropping and dragging. Or simply change them so they are the same order as you establish in the menu. Establish consistency – problem solved.

Hmmmm – I don’t seem to be getting anywhere.

I deleted that menu, created another one, now none of the pages want to be ‘sub item’ pages. They are all now insisting on being primary pages, despite the fact that none of the order numbers are conflicting (they either have no order numbers, or they are in the order I want them to be in the menu). Also, all parent pages have been established.

It might be I’m using Chrome? (despite the fact I’ve not had any issues before – I’ll try it anyway).

I seriously cannot find out what I’m doing differently today…

Ah, well there you go – I used Internet Explorer and the changes took and everything is OK.

    I don’t know what that means…

But thank you all for your help anyway!

    @mindybowman
You’re welcome. I sense you are a Staff wannbe. Am I right? :)

    @clareeyoung

I used Internet Explorer and the changes took and everything is OK.

Provided you are using a browser and version supported by wordpress.com see http://browsehappy.com there ought to be no difference. IE9, IE10 and IE11 are supported.

If you are not seeing the same display in IE, Firefox and Chrome let us know:
    (a) Exactly what kind of device you are using to connect to the internet and to WordPress.com.
    (b) Exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://www.whatbrowser.org/
    (c) Exactly what you experience including what any error reports you receive state.

@clareeyoung I just took a look on Chrome and it looks like it’s behaving there, too. :)

@timethief let’s just say I’m trying it out and at the very least (or most) I’m learning a lot which is always a good thing in my book. :)
