Menu tabs on Oxygen template.

I’m just starting my blog. For some reason, when I sample the Fresh and Clean template, I have tabs that appear at the top of my blog (under the header). But when I go to Oxygen (the template I actually want) – I can’t figure out how to get anything alongside ‘about.
I think what is confusing to me is the relationship between the menu and pages. I understand this is probably pretty basic, but I’ve literally devoted hours to it and can’t figure out how it works differently on different templates!
Any basic advice you could share would be so, so welcome!

Thanks! I do have another question — is there any difference between the menus that I have on the left and the tabs on the top? Or are they both versions of the same thing? (pages)

Yes. The navigation menu below your custom header image is the Primary Menu, while the other (Writing, Yoga) is the Secondary Menu.
