Menus and Posts

    Hello.

I have a WordPress blog http://www.murrayfoote.com, using Twenty Ten style. Everything is standard.

Is it possible to have menus and submenus, each with multiple posts in chronological order?

Currently the blog shows my trip to Patagonia, Antarctica, Iguazu Falls and Easter Island. I have New York Images to add fromn another trip, in a few months will have images from Japan and later (when I get to it) Lighthouses and Live Music. How I had imagined it working was to create menus and submenus for the trip categories, transfer all the posts for that trip to them and have them appear in chronological order. I also preferred that where two menu levels were available, you have to select from the second level, not the first (because some may not realise it is possible to select from the first).

Instead, the way it seems to work is that for each menu item you can have a page but not assign posts to that page (or specify their order). The best I could do, therefore, would be to have itineraries for each menu page containing links to posts.

Is what I would prefer to do possible, preferably easily and without getting involved with a complex custom solution?

    Regards,
    Murray Foote

    Easy, actually.

Categorize your posts appropriately, eg: New York, perhaps subcategories NYC and Upstate and then you use a Custom Menu to link to the category page for New York and subcategories under that of NYC and Upstate. Etc, Etc. As long as the posts are categorized correctly, they’ll be displayed in chronological order.

OK, thanks for the reply. I tried that in a test blog and didn’t get the categorised posts to appear. I’ll have to try again.

What’s the link to the test blog? As long as you use the link to the category pages, not to static pages, it will work.

Ah, Ive got that working now as far as posts appearing on menus and submenus by category – but it’s still reverse chronological order. Any way of getting chronological order for particular menus and submenus?

OH, I misunderstood. No, there is not, short of editing the timestamp of each post. Gruelling.

… and that won’t even work because then, though the posts would be in chronological order, the post-to-post navigation would then be in reverse chronological order.

No, if you change the date of the posts, they will be in reverse order EVERYWHERE.

Yes, but if you click the {Next Post} link at the top or the bottom of a page, it will go to the previous post.

Never change the date on a published post as the date is part of the URL for the post and it will create bucket loads of 404 not found errors on the search engines, and Google for one is getting really whiny about 404 errors.

Ah, OK. Thank you for that.
