Menus Update

So once again, Automattic have performed a retrograde “update”, this one making menus that much harder to maintain, even for those of us who have opted to remain with the “old” admin interface thanks to the limitations inherent in the “improved” admin UI. Specifically:

    1. A one step process (or at most a 2-step process, depending on the pre-selected menu) of accessing a top-level menu to update it, is now by default a three-step process.
    2. The menu display is now confined to an ineffective sidebar, rather than a full-page layout. This makes visual scanning of the menu and making multiple adjustments much harder.
    3. Search is now severely weakened:
    4. The top-level search defaults to finding posts, not pages, categories, tags, etc.
    5. When adding an item to a menu, there is now no ability to individually search Page, Category, Tag, etc, lists.
    6. Lists of created Pages, Categories, Tags, etc., to be added to a menu aren’t displayed alphabetically, making a visual search for an item much harder and less intuitive.
    7. When adding a page, category, tag, is now impossible to easily scroll back through the menu layout to correctly place the item in its desired position within the menu.

Past responses to users raising issues like these have tended to fall on deaf ears, with platitudes presented by way of reply. I’ve little doubt this will again be the case. However, these changes do prompt me to ask one question:

Do those making these changes actually use the product on a day-to-day basis for themselves?

If you want Staff to take notice of your feedback then type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for a Staff follow-up. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question

  • Hi @peysworld, let’s work through these one at a time if you don’t mind.

A one step process (or at most a 2-step process, depending on the pre-selected menu) of accessing a top-level menu to update it, is now by default a three-step process.

Can you tell me what you were doing before and what you’re being forced to do now? There are a few different ways to go about editing menus.

@peysworld If you are referring to the fact that the WP Admin Appearance Menus link was redirecting to the My Sites/Calypso version earlier today, if you revisit your WP Admin dashboard you will find that is now no longer the case.

  • Let’s stay on topic here and not hijack @peysworld’s thread (in fact we’ll remove unrelated comments.) If you’d like to start your own thread on this we’ll do what we can there.

@supernovia. My apologies for going off topic.

  • OK. @peysworld, I’d be happy to help with these points. Again though, let’s work through each one separately to avoid confusion.

Also on re-reading your post, I realized it may be helpful to get screenshots of what you’re referring to, since we may be talking about different things. You can upload those to your media library then update us here. Thanks in advance.

@Supernovia Before jumping down someone’s neck for posting a comment on a thread, you might want to verify if what they are saying could actually be related – in this case themagicrobot.

@themagicrobot – your first comment was spot-on. On logging-out of WP and then logging back in, the issue was in fact fixed & the Menus link was correctly directing me to the older Menus page, not the mess I was seeing (which I assume was the My Sites/Calypso update you were referring to).

Kudos for you for spotting the issue first time, and my thanks!

  • @peysworld I took off the unrelated comments and left that one, because it was related.
