Menus, widgets & changing my theme.

  I am considering changing my theme and I want to keep my drop-down menus and my widgets. Do I need to do something to keep them as they are now or do I need to start again from scratch?

  Drop-down menus: Depends on whether you created them via a custom menu or via child pages and page order numbers only. In the first case, the menu may be deactivated: you go to Appearance > Menus and select it again from the pulldown in the Theme Locations module. In the second case the menus will remain as they were if the new theme supports dropdowns in its regular menu: if not, you’ll need to create a custom menu.

  Widgets: If you switch to a similarly designed theme they’ll remain in place. Otherwise they get deactivated. In that case you go to Appearance > Widgets and drag them back from Inactive to Sidebar.
