wondering if it is possible to market my paintings on a wordpress site e.g a shopping basket linked to a paypal account and a portfolio of my work? Would i need a different kind of site for this or something on ebay?

WordPress.org http://wordpress.org offers free software that you can install on a web server. You can upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, and edit the database and equip the blog for ecommerce.
NOTE: The only products and/or services you are allowed to sell on any free hosted WordPress.COM blogs are those you personally create and provide. If you have an Esty account for example or any other site that has a shopping cart for your own merchandise sales then you can create a custom menu and include a custom link to it in the custom menu.
