Merging Two WP Accounts Into One

  • Unknown's avatar

I originally set up a WP.com account to handle some of the Jetpack stuff years ago — way before the Automattic days. As I closed it down and moved into a new niche, I forgot about it and created a new one by simply adding a “1” behind the name. I had figured that someone had hijacked my branding name and forgotten that I actually had an account with WP.

I control both accounts as one is via the Gmail I originally set up and the other via my branded email. My issue is that the original account controls the Gravatar image which has been with me forever and is kinda like my branding as well.

Is it possible to merge the first account with the second account? I ask as anytime I have to get into Jetpack or WP.com It pulls them both up for auto login and sometimes if I don’t pay attention I make changes in the wrong one only to see an error as that website doesn’t exist. That, in turn, makes me have to log out, reconnect Jetpack, resign in — it is simply a real pain in the ass!

    Thanks!

  • Hey there! Sure, you can kinda merge them.

    1) Decide username you want to keep, and which email you want to keep using for the account’s primary address.

    2) Log into the account you don’t want to keep. Check to be sure it’s not using your ideal email. If it is using the ideal email address, you’ll need to free it up. You can change that to a different address, or just use an alias email. Be sure to confirm the changes via the link that arrives in your email.

    2) Log the unwanted account on Gravatar.com. Remove any extra email addresses there. Download a copy of your image.

    3) Transfer anything else you need to the new account. I’d recommend checking in with Jetpack support, too. https://wordpress.com/support/transferring-a-site-to-another-wordpress-com-account/

From there, just add the wanted email address to the wanted account, and ads its gravatar picture. From there, you can close the other account:

It’s a bit tricky to explain, but again you’re just freeing up the email (and pictures) you want.
