Message – Jetpack plugin is deactivated.

I am getting a message that the Jetpack plugin is deactivated. This is a brand new site and when I click on Jetpack it says its active. The plugins section also says that Jetpack is active. So, why am I getting theis message on my home screen:
We can’t communicate with your site because the Jetpack plugin is deactivated.
