Messages through the Contact Us form only arrive when the sender is logged in

Somehow the Contact Us form sends emails only when the sender is logged into the account. I am using the WP Mail SMTP plugin, checked all the settings there and theoretically all should be fine – but somehow it isn’t.
What could I be overlooking?
