What is it with free WordPress sites. Do they just not care anymore? I have lost data, the widgets are all messed up. Does anyone have a good recommendation for a simple blog?

Hi @chrisknits Can you say a little more about this?

I have lost data, the widgets are all messed up.

Your theme, Wilson, is still available for use so if something isn’t working as it should, and you’re still interested in using this theme, we can try to help work out issues.

Simple theme recommendations: Are you interested in sticking with Classic themes or are you ready to venture into using the newer Block themes and Site Editor? That will help narrow down suggestions.

I prefer Classic. I am trying to use widgets to display info, but I don’t have the old style widgets I used for links and lists. I used Legacy Widgets, but they are inactive when I try to modify them. Or are completely missing when I go back to change something. Also, photos are missing from my media. Any help would be appreciated.

The old Links/Blogroll widget was retired quite some time ago and there were reports by other WordPress.com site owners that the blogroll widget disappeared from their sidebar/footer. The suggestion from staff at that time was to recreate the widget using the List block instead. https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/list-block/ In general most widgets are now blocks. Here’s general info on working with the new version of widgets https://wordpress.com/support/widgets/ and here’s a list of the currently available widgets https://wordpress.com/support/category/create-content/widgets/

What other widgets on your site do you want to change?

As far as photos missing from your Media Library(?), were they being used in a post or page on your site? If so, please link to it so that I can take a look.

Simple theme recommendations: Here’s the available free Classic themes https://wordpress.com/themes/all/free/filter/classic-theme Popular themes include Independent Publisher 2, Button 2, Twenty Sixteen, Libre 2. Not every theme has a sidebar, so if that’s important for you, then you’ll want to explore the Previews.
