Hi, my meta description on google search doesnt make sense and I can’t find where to change it. I also have ‘About’ at the front of my title in google search, instead of my actual blog name. Please can someone help?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • WordPress.com does not provide the ability to set your own description meta tags. It’s only possible for self-hosted blogs.

When search engines, particularly Google, are crawling web pages to show in search results, they rely on several factors to decide which page will occupy what rank.

The description and title that shows up in the search listing is also dependent on several factors, including the page’s content and description meta tag.

What the search engine ultimately chooses is not fixed or guaranteed.

    • It can pick up any relevant text from the page and show it as the description in search results.
    • Or, it can also use the text specified in the description meta tag.
    • Similarly, ranking of pages is also calculated according to its own internal algorithm.

Also, upon searching keywords related to your blog, another blog is displayed in the search results with the About page on top, which is NOT anenglishgem.wordpress.com, rather a similar URL.

  • What you can try doing is set a tag line for your blog in Settings > General.

And hope that Google picks it up as a suitable description.

Trying to change the http bit to www now?!

can’t do – no www in any WordPress.COM hosted sites – www is so old school and a bit obsolete – if you put www in a link to your site it will however redirect to the correct address

    Oh, right.

I thought it might help get to top of the page when type my exact site name in, as I noticed that some addresses above in google search their site names aren’t the exact title. So I assume it’s to do with a mix of other googles algorithms that they’ve surpassed my search name to be further up.

    Thanks auxclass for the info

  • Indeed, it’s not necessary for website addresses/URLs and titles to be the same.

Google seems to be treating “English” “British” the same in your case. Not to worry though, your website ranking can rise, provided you keep adding quality content on a regular basis.

    Good luck.
