Meta description

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello!

I am currently dissatisfied with the text that gets picked up in the search engine results, as it doesn’t provide the best description of what my website is about. I want it to be more relevant. I would have thought that the first paragraph of my homepage would be selected, but for some reason a different paragraph appears. As far as I know, you can’t manually add meta tags using HTML code on WordPress.com, so is there a way I can make the first paragraph of my homepage appear as meta description without upgrading to Business Plan to have access to SEO plugins?
    Thanks

    Kind Regards,
    Diana

  • Hello Diana,

Happy to help you with this.

You may wish to check out these chapters here: https://wordpress.com/support/?s=SEO regarding SEO.

A good thing to pay attention to, would be the page excerpts on each page: https://wordpress.com/support/excerpts/

    Also the site title: https://wordpress.com/support/settings/#general

    I hope this helps!

    Hi,

Thank you; however, this generic info doesn’t solve my issue. I had already written an excerpt with the right text but it didn’t get picked up. The site title is fine. I just need help with the meta description. For some reason, one of the last paragraphs on my homepage gets picked up when I type my name and see my website in search engines. I was inclined to think it could have something to do with the configuration of the page – the block types I used for the first paragraph versus the last, but I think that’s not the case because I remember that even before I revamped my website, when there was only one paragraph on my homepage including multiple sentences, for some reason Google picked up the last sentence from that paragraph (which is now among the last paragraphs and is the one showing up in search results).

This seems bizarre to me. I just need a clear, concise answer. I would appreciate transparency.

I mean I need help with the description *

  • Hello there,

I just need help with the meta description. For some reason, one of the last paragraphs on my homepage gets picked up when I type my name and see my website in search engines.

From what I can see there’s nothing awry with the site, the content or the blocks used. Ultimately, we don’t control what Google indexes as a search engine.

If you check out the source code: view-source:https://dianamarin.com/

The only thing that sticks out is that the homepage doesn’t have a title, but even then, I wouldn’t class this as detrimental.

You can try and influence that with webmaster tools, via re-crawling, but there are no guarantees.

I hope this is again useful.
