Meta Description Tag Support For Personal Plans

Feature Request: Please add support for creating a Meta Description Tag in Personal Plans. I feel this is a must have for displaying a site attractively in search engines, and should be available to the lowest tier of WordPress subscriptions. Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @spacerik, the finer-tuning for SEO is only available in higher plans, but have you considered setting the excerpt? I want to say the SEO description comes from that, or from the Tagline / Site Description if you’re on the main page.

Hi there, hope you don’t mind me adding that there was a suggestion in one of the free WPcom webinars on SEO to do exactly that, i.e. use the excerpt box for your post meta description. There were other good tips there too that everyone can impliment.

Thanks, I will try using excerpts. In case I’m missing something, I have to do this for every post though right?

  • You’ll need to set an excerpt on every post, yes. This is much better for SEO than setting just a single global tag for the site as a whole, as you’d be able to individualize your excerpt to every specific post.

You can find the webinar video @justjennifer mentioned above here:

    Ok great, thanks!

Hey all, thanks for the help. I set an excerpt for every post and will for new posts as well. The issue is that what is written in the excerpt doesn’t show for the site description in search engines. Does anyone know why this is or what I’m doing wrong? Thanks!

  • You’re not doing anything wrong. It just takes for search engines a few weeks to crawl your site again and update their search results.

Cool, was wondering because the newest crawl went through and it shows info about the latest post, not the excerpt.

  • Hi @spacerik, can you let us know what’s turning up in the latest crawl?

Also I noticed you seem to have gone through and set all of your excerpts the same for every post. Is that your intention? I’m not sure it’ll be great for discoverability, unless people are only searching that particular line and not the site content.

Thanks for the response. What I’m seeing now for the description in Google is –

“Posted byE June 2, 2020 August 15, 2020 Posted inPhotography Tags:Abstract, iPhone, iPhoneography Leave a comment on SAMURAI …“

The reason the first part says June 2 is that refers to a pinned (featured) post I just created.

I wanted all the excerpts the same for homepage posts. I might change this in the future.

    Thanks!

  • Hm, ok. If you did make the changes, it should update correctly within a few weeks on Google’s end.

To be clear, this is all up to Google and their usual time frame.

Ok great, thanks for the help!
