meta tag to verify ownership of site

  I am trying to verify the ownership of my sites in Google webmaster tools. I have tried pasting the meta tag info in the relevant place on my WordPress sites but Google keeps saying it can’t verify ownership. I am a little bit unsure as to which bit of the meta tag is the ‘content’. And, if it is only that bit I enter on the site. Also, if my sites are private, would that stop Google from being able to verify?

  Copy and paste the whole thing onto your page in text. I just did it now. It works

  Google can’t verify a private site

  Just pasting meta strings into a Post or Page will also not work

  Why verify a Private site? – search engines will only crawl public sites

  I was trying to get Google to remove a cached page so needed to verify the site… .
