Meta Tags

    I am really have basic knowledge of computers (very basic) but have managed to set up my wordpress blog. I have literally done it by googling the questions I needed to know. I now want to add a meta tag and have looked on the wordpress site but don’t understand it. Please could somebody explain how to do it in really simple terms. This is apparently what I should do. I don’t even know what the head.php template file is or how to access it. I also don’t understand how to place a meta tag in my header, or how to access the header.

    Thanks

    the header.php template file in your WordPress Theme, specifically in the head section near the link for the style sheet. At the top you will see the DOCTYPE tag and below that you will see a couple more tags and then the <title> tag, looking something like this:

    <title /><?php bloginfo(‘name’); ? /><?php wp_title();

    Is your blog hosted at WordPress.com? We don’t use meta tags on WP.com blogs, so it’s not something you have to worry about; we get good search results through WP’s tagging system as it is. If you have a blog with WordPress.org software, you can use meta tags, but you’ll need to ask over at http://wordpress.org/support as we don’t have access to those files here.

    No, my blog is hosted under http://:homeschoollawaustralia.com with MD Webhosting. I don’t really understand the tagging system.

    Cheers

    I think that is a WP.com blog; you must have registered the name with MD. So I don’t think you have to worry about the meta tag, which should make things simpler.

    Anyway, basically tags and categories are the same thing; they’re unique keywords that people can use to find your blog. Say you write a post about education, if you use tags or categories like School and Education, it helps people searching for those terms to find it. If someone is on your blog and looks at the Education category, then they’ll see everything you’ve posted about Education; it helps people to sort through your posts.

    The good thing as well is that these tags are picked up by Google, Yahoo and other search engines; that’s why you don’t need meta tags – the categories and tags we use are treated much the same way. So all you have to do is make sure you use relevant tags as you write your posts and you should be fine. I hope that’s clear enough. :)

    How do I add categories or tag on the fly?
