Magazine Theme Has Disappeared?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am extremely angry right now. I have spent over a week going through at least 50 different themes for my blog, and finally chose my favorite. I’ve now spent the better part of the entire month of July working at home full-time getting this site completely functional, tailoring my featured images to the new sizes required etc.

My Premium plan is not up for renewal until November 2017, so it’s not an issue of payment. I don’t know how this theme was originally purchased – it seems that all Premium themes are available for me to just take at the moment, so don’t know if that’s a glitch or not. But if so, why would it take a MONTH to figure that out or more, when I literally was about 2 hours away from being finished with the design of this site.

Even more bizarre, the theme doesn’t show up when I search for it in the theme store. Your themes are supposed to be “lifetime” – and one month definitely doesn’t CUT it.

I turned 50 this morning, but I feel 75 thinking about having to go through this all over again. I can tell you right now, there’s no way I WILL go through this again. If I’m going to start over, it won’t be with WordPress, and the whole world is going to know why.

    Hi,

Happy Birthday! Unfortunately, the theme you’re referring to has been retired. Retired themes may only be used on sites created before the theme was retired.

I’m not able to detect the theme that is presently applied to the site https://calling1out.com/ in the Action bar at the bottom right hand corner, which suggests that a retired theme is applied.

One of the ways WordPress.com discourages members from using retired themes is by removing the corresponding theme guides. Therefore the URL that used to display the theme guide, now displays only a notice about the theme having been retired, and a link to “our WordPress.com theme directory,” otherwise known as the themes showcase.

If you have a site that was created before the retirement of the theme, or if you are able to obtain one, then you’ll be free to still use the theme. The premium themes support forum remains open, here. I don’t find anything about the retirement of the theme in the topics presently listed there, but I imagine that there may be at least one soon.

I don’t know how this theme was originally purchased – it seems that all Premium themes are available for me to just take at the moment, so don’t know if that’s a glitch or not. But if so, why would it take a MONTH to figure that out or more…

The opening sentence of the Premium Themes support page:

On a site with the Premium or Business plan, you can switch to any premium theme at no extra cost, as many times as you’d like.

@calling1out: You still should be able to use the theme on your site since you had access before. If not, then please reach out to WordPress.com support staff as they very likely will be able to reactivate the theme for your site.

It’s also worth mentioning that only the outdated WordPress.com version of the theme has been retired due to some recent changes on WordPress.com. The up-to-date theme for self-hosted WordPress sites is available: https://www.mhthemes.com/themes/mh/magazine/

WordPress.com users with a Business plan subscription can upload 3rd party themes and plugins: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

    @mhthemes,

    Thanks. : -)

    @calling1out,

Btw, I’ve been using the same theme for about eight years on my primary site. That didn’t change when it was retired a few years ago, and I’ve encountered no significant problems due to its retirement yet.

My site was created 3 year ago last week and I’ve had the theme for over a month nor, fully developed. I have also reached out to Support so hopefully they will get back ASAP. I think it’s unprofessional for them to just yank the theme without any notification at all -at least not that I saw. Thanks so much for your feedback and also from MHThemes – a sad day indeed as I’m a huge fan of this theme.

You’re welcome. Sorry about the trouble. Which theme is presently applied to the site? You are referring to the site https://calling1out.com/?

Do you mean Live Chat Support, which is available to you, since you have the Premium Plan?

If you were using the theme on the site before it was retired, then it would still be the theme applied to the site.

If you had switched to another theme temporarily and want to switch back to your previous theme, ordinarily this could be done at either the My Site Themes page, https://wordpress.com/themes/, or at the WP Admin themes page for the site. However, on an 8+ year old site I was unable to find the theme among the available themes. So I’m going to call for staff attention to the topic.

I think it’s The Writer or something – I threw up anything to make it look like I’d spent 5 minutes on it even, as the stripped out theme was replaced with some generic thing that wasn’t even remotely similar

  • Hi there,

You should be able to reactivate the theme if you search here. Since you paid for it, you should always have access to it.

Please let me know if that works for you.

    Thanks,

IT DOES IT DOES! Oh thank you so much! SO MUCH. And though the CSS file seems to be done it looks like for the most part all the changes are still saved into the template anyway somehow – appreeciate this so much.

    staff-doublebassd,

I threw up anything…as the stripped out theme was replaced with some generic thing that wasn’t even remotely similar

Why was the theme that had been applied to @calling1out’s site “stripped out” when the theme was retired and replaced by another theme?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m afraid that was my fault. I was looking at themes last night but I didn’t think I had activated anything. But I must have and it stripped the now defunct theme from my site. I thought it would take days to get this resolved but not even 24 hours after it began I had a very helpful man who assisted me this evening and am very grateful.

  • Unknown's avatar

No worries. Understood. I had mentioned the same WP Admin themes page, but hadn’t provided a link to it. Glad you’re all set now. : )

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes and I owe you a huge thanks! My site was absolutely the way I had left it yesterday which was a big relief! But you were very kind to walk me through what to do and who to talk to – my first support forum request in 3 years – answered in less than 12 hours :)
