MI Website
-
Hi, I tried to move my site over to a free domain from wordpress because we are migrating our site to another host and server called Brightspot. This is a requirement for my university. But I accidentally changed mi.byu.edu to mi.byu.wordpress.com and I can’t see the mi.byu.edu website. I’m panicking a little because I don’t want to lose all the content and everything.
WP.com: Unknown
Jetpack: Yes
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Good Morning –
I’ll be glad to offer some help. Looking at things from my end, I’m not finding mi.byu.wordpress.com in our system. You would not be able to register a double dot in a free site address like that. Is there a typo?
-
I had registered it as mi.byu.wordpress.com and then got the error message afterwards. I’m not sure what happened to the domain or anything now, it’s all gone. I can’t log in with the WP admin page I normally use.

because we are migrating our site to another host and server called Brightspot.
But this is the host WordPress.com. Is your free site mibyu.wordpress.com ?? It sounds like your other site is elsewhere and perhaps you need to reach out to Brightspot for advice if that is where you plan to build a site. Your original site is probably still where it is on some other company’s server.
-
According to our IT team, the domain is likely linked to WordPress and the servers are AWS.
-
@themaxwellinstitute, if you changed the site address of your Brightspot installation to accidentally include WordPress.com, you’ll need to fix it on the Brightspot installation. Your IT people should be able to help with one of these options:

Hoping that helps!

Also if it helps going forward, here’s the difference between our services and the open source software:

So our website didn’t move over to Brightspot at all until today. The issue we were having is with WordPress’s hosting and not being able to get into my website or account. It was created on WordPress and the domain was from WordPress, and I cannot get into the website. It was mi.byu.edu and I used to be able to log in with https://mi.byu.edu/wp-admin/ but now it doesn’t work. I can’t recover my old website and I’ve been working with my IT people as well as trying to get help from this forum, but I don’t think I’m being understood correctly.
All that happened was that I went onto my WordPress website, tried to change my paid site to a free site mi.byu.wordpress.com and it went through. Then when I tried to get onto that website again, it didn’t exist. So now I’m unable to access my site that was hosted on WordPress. It’s impossible for me to get it back and I need that content for my new website. I’m just trying to recover it all.

For example, I’m getting emails like this:
A new comment on the post “Dr. John Gee transferred to BYU’s Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages” is waiting for your approval

Hmm. Are you sure it wasn’t a copy of WordPress hosted elsewhere? I don’t have any record of mi.byu.edu being hosted here, and you just created this account recently. I really don’t see many BYU.edu sites here at all, in fact. Again, recall we are a hosting company, separate from the free WordPress software you were using.
The DNS points to another hosting company right now:
dkxdkh82vyjfi.cloudfront.net. 39 IN A 18.65.229.105 dkxdkh82vyjfi.cloudfront.net. 39 IN A 18.65.229.84 dkxdkh82vyjfi.cloudfront.net. 39 IN A 18.65.229.67 dkxdkh82vyjfi.cloudfront.net. 39 IN A 18.65.229.68Archive.org/web indicates the site was running WordPress at some point, but it was apparently hosted with Amazon rather than our services (you can tell from the image URLs). Does that sound right?
And, the current homepage for https://mi.byu.edu/ does not seem to be running WordPress at all.
Wherever it’s hosted now, if you have a copy of WordPress and want it to work, here’s what you need to undo:
But I accidentally changed mi.byu.edu to mi.byu.wordpress.com
You would want to ask your hosting provider for help with these steps to change the address back. Just choose one of the options that does not require wp-admin access.
