    Good afternoon Sebastian!
If you want to have an existing domain point to you at WordPress, you can follow the directions found here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

As far as canceling your account with your ISP, that is between you and your ISP.

To be sure, you just want the domain to point to WordPress and do NOT want to migrate your site to WordPress correct? If your old site was a WrdPress blog you can export your old site and import it into your new blog. The way to do that is covered here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/

    Hope this helps!

    Hello,

    thanks for the reply!

No: I want to completely cancel my old hosting provider contract. Though i want to make sure the domain can be transferred to wordpress.com afterwards flawlessly.

While you can register a new domain here at WordPress.com, they don’t accept incoming transfers of existing domain names. If you want to keep the same address you’ll need to keep the name registered at your current registrar and then you can use the domain for your site here at WordPress.com by mapping the domain. If you want to leave your old host completely you’ll have to start again with a new address and (if possible depending on where you are currently) export your content and import it here at WordPress.com.

    Hello again Sebastian
Again, the contract with your old ISP is between you and them. They may be willing to offer you a redirect for a period of time at an additional co$t.

You COULD opt to let the page expire at the end of your contract with them, but have your old page redirect anyone to your new page. A most excellent article on how to do this is found here:
    http://www.rapidtables.com/web/dev/html-redirect.htm

This might be the better solution for you

  • Hi there,

Please read @themagicrobot’s reply, as that’s the accurate one. It’s not possible to transfer the domain here, so you need to leave it registered with the current registrar and map it here. You don’t need to keep paying your current provider for hosting if you move your site here, but you’ll need to keep paying them for the domain.

    @dave2swords

A site redirect is NOT the correct way to point a domain to WordPress.com. A redirect will send traffic here, but it won’t have the site appear and be indexed at the domain, and we do not recommend that as a way to connect a domain to WordPress.com.

    Hello,

thanks for all the nice replies!

Last questino: Do I really need the Premium plan to map my existing domain or will the basic plan for $2.99 suffice?

    Best Regards
    Sebastian

  • You can use the Personal plan, yes. In that case, first go to My Site ->Plans and add the plan. And then go to My Site ->Domains ->Add to claim your free domain mapping upgrade.
