Please keep in mind that domain registrations are only refundable for 48 hours after purchase. And also that registering and canceling a domain can make it a hassle to register it again elsewhere in the near term. So if you are just testing out the WordPress.com Business plan, I would encourage you not to use the domain registration credit until you are sure that the Business plan will work for you.

On the business plan, it is possible to edit installed theme and plugin files.
What customisation are you looking to do exactly?

like… the page layout should not be limited to the theme.. if required other changes apart from colors and things should be possible

Yes to both! However, you would need the Business plan to install third-party plugins and themes and to have access to modify code directly.
With the Business plan, you get a temporary staging website address, so you can work on all your customizations and changes and make sure the site looks the way you intend before moving your domain over. It’s the same as if you used the WordPress software on your own hosting provider, but we also provide security, backups, and priority support for your site, which should be a big help.
