Migrate Images to Self-Hosted WordPress

  Too many media files. I have tried exporting in smaller chunks and importing, but images are still not uploading to my new self-hosted WP install — I NEED my media images moved over.

  What can I do? Can I get a .zip of media files?

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  Hi,

  Just to make sure, are you following this official guide to move your site to self-hosted WordPress? While importing the XML file, you’ll see an option to download and import file attachments. Enabling it will allow your self-hosted site to import all media automatically from your WordPress.com site.

  I did do that, but I have 1.5 GB of images and it did not download them all. I am having to export my media by month and import separately and even then, it’s not getting all of the images.

  You can check with your web host if they’re throttling/blocking the import by any chance.

  Meanwhile, please add the modlook tag to this thread (in the right sidebar) so that Staff can take a look at the issue.

  Hi there,

  What is the URL of the site you’re exporting from? Is that site set to private?

  The export file doesn’t contain any images, so the number or total file size of images is irrelevant. The export file only contains links to where your images are stored in the media library.

  When you import that file to another site, the importer there will first import the content, and then go looking for the media files at those links. If the original site is set to private, the importer won’t be able to find those files, so the source site must remain public until the media files have finished transferring.

  That said, this doesn’t always work correctly, but that’s usually due to the setup of the self-hosted site. And as we don’t have access to your self-hosted site’s dashboard, that’s not something we can help with. If your source site is set to public, but the media files still won’t import correctly, please ask in the WordPress.org forums about that.

  There is no way to bulk-download all your media files from a WordPress.com site.
